HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION DEADLINE
APRIL 2, 2018
Much discussion has been going on in the area of property taxes and specifically property tax assessments in Fulton County over the past several months.  I’ll provide you with an update on that in a future note but today, I want to encourage you to take a look at your property tax situation and make sure that you have taken advantage of all of the exemptions available. If you have not done so, you will need to take action before April 2, 2018 in order to benefit this tax year.

In reviewing scores of property tax records last year, I noticed many of you did not have a homestead exemption on your property.  If you are eligible, I highly encourage you to file for homestead as you do not receive this exemption automatically.  You have to qualify and apply for it. It provides an immediate break and will also likely be the basis for any future tax payer protections, such as those presently being considered in the state legislature.

Additionally, there are multiple other exemptions available to seniors and disabled persons.  While these are not as expansive or as up to date as I think they should be, there are several potential exemptions.  Most have an income requirement and there are often different exemptions for the city, school and county government portion of your taxes. Similar to homestead exemptions, these are not automatic, and you have to apply for them.

Below is a link to the Fulton County Guide to Homestead Exemptions which provides additional details:

Again, please review your personal property tax situation and make sure that you obtain the exemptions for which you are eligible as they can save you a considerable amount of money in taxes.

DON’T WAIT.  THE DEADLINE IS APRIL 2, 2018!

If you have questions, please feel free to contact my office and we will get you in touch with the experts who can help you navigate the available exemptions. We want to ensure that you receive all the breaks to which you are entitled as  I know that every dollar counts.

Sincerely,
Bob
