La Ruta del Bakalao - Museo del Remember (1985-2012)

New Colpa Press book now available! La Ruta del Bakalao tells the story of the cultural and musical movement that took place in and around Valencia’s dance clubs from the early 1980s to the late ’90s. Following the success of the previous Rave Flyer books and highlighting the distinct aesthetics that emerge in different times and places, it's the context here that sets La Ruta de Bakalao apart. Between the flyers from Rubén Hernández’s Museo del Remember and the interviews and images from Susana Oliva, this publication feels deeply personal.

Check out Bézier's newest on Dark Entries (further down) which draws heavily on influences from this scene.

Generaiderz Issue 2

2nd volume from the local rave archive heroes, Generaiderz. Recaps of favorite rave moments through stories and photographs, interviews on creating during quarantine, CST's Cat shares her personal experience raving in the Bay through "tales from a former East Bay raver (1999-2001)", modern Bay Area style with a cut-out rave doll to decorate, top tracks, and DJ of the year.
Jerod S. Rivera - Collected Works (2018-2021)

A lovely follow up to Virgo, an album that's had plenty of play at CST. This collection of previously unreleased tracks, improvisations, and experiments recorded during the past three years only reinforces Rivera's range and dexterity with analog synthesis, from soothing counterpoint to full on 4/4, now available on limited cassette.

Arboreal - Pathways EP

Oakland producer Arboreal’s third release comes in a limited edition cassette with artwork done by Rose Cherami. Hazy, lo-fi scapes that is reminiscent of early to mid 90s SF illbient (Asphodel comes to mind) with a touch of William Basinski if he overlapped into the Ninja Tune realm.

Shop pick - the ethereal keys of "when it gets quiet' and the skittery hi hat of "twisted frame" are ones I find myself going back to.

"Light In Every Corner" from the Pathways EP with music video by Rose Cherami
Toro Y Moi - Mahal

Happy to finally get these in! Chaz Bear’s newest seems to be the sonic embodiment of the jeepney that appears on the cover of Mahal. Laid back, light-hearted psych-funk that taps into nostalgic 70s folk ballad sentiments, with songs bleeding into one another to create one meandering trip perfect for that long summer drive.

Shop pick - the airy Stereolab-esque jazz pop of Last Year

Dark Entries

Exciting new batch from a local favorite. Bézier's Valencia explores a darker wavey side, fortuitously channeling a connection to La Ruta de Bakalao, the 80's and 90's Spanish party scene that's also the subject of Colpa's most recent book. The incredible Back Up compiles 10 diverse tracks for the first ever vinyl compilation of Mexican post-punk and new wave, shining a light on sounds that have received far less attention than music coming from the US/Europe. Piercing Red presents the lyrics and poetry of radical Greek artist/musician Lena Platonos, appearing for the first time in English translation.

For OPAF, Cone Shape Top will revisit Dream Radio, a project initially presented as bodyworkbodywork at OPAF 2019 in San Pedro. Dream Radio showcased the work of over 20 international artists working in a wide variety of sound in a site-specific location. For 2022 we plan to expand on this vision, presenting another immersive and surreal listening experience in San Pedro, (9/17-9/18).

We are seeking submissions of recorded sound (max length 5 minutes) to play as part of this program. Open to all sonic transmissions (music, sound art, spoken word, field recordings, demos, interviews, and anything else that you can think of). All submissions will be included, please share!

Submission Deadline : Aug 1, 2022
