For our new installment of Cicada
we are excited to welcome IDHAZ
IDHAZ is a producer/vocalist transporting through dark portals to sounds of undiscovered emotion, past, future, and fractured light. He began performing poetry in 2010, and since then has become a magnetic, multi-disciplinary performance artist in the Bay Area. Combining elements of gameboy, beat machines, synth, and genre fluid vocals, IDHAZ creates visceral soundscapes to immerse into. IDHAZ is also part of the bands pieces indigo and tugboyz. He teaches local youth various mediums of expression, and has lead a variety of writing workshops for local artists.
~ NEW ARRIVALS ~
Hella Pinay Issue 3
Issue 3 has hit the stands :D With beautifully written features on Liyang Network, profile highlights on contemporary designers exploring cultural fashion as statement couture, femme and nonbinary Filipinx tattoo artists highlights, musicians thoughts on the PI 2022 presidential election (cool to see Catpuke in there), and looking at food origins to move towards food justice, not to mention the always on point creative direction and styled shoots (especially the one with LUKRESIA! @thirdworldbb - nice deep cut)
Space Ghost - Private Paradise
Lucky to have scored some copies of the self-released cassette version of this stunning album released earlier in 2022 on Pacific Rhythm. Inspired by time spent in Sea Ranch on the Northern California coast, Private Paradise flows deftly from new age to downtempo to deep house and back again, the common thread being an uplifting, healing calm throughout.
Shop pick - the beatless rhythm on "Sounds of Peace"
YNV - Cosmic Cult EP
Local SF producer by way of Belgium as well as one of the members of the mighty Vague Terrain crew, YNV follows up their 2021 LP with three new mystical slow-burn stompers. Prog/cosmic/folk-infused dark 5rhythms dance floor energy.
Shop pick - getting lost in the downtempo haze of "Rhythmic Reflection"
* Vague Terrain is back! Catch them at Underground SF
Friday, Aug 5 9 PM - 2 AM

Clipd Beaks - In Abandon
Emerging from an extended hiatus, Clipd Beaks returns with their newest release 10 years in the making! More subdued than previous work, a gothic foggy coast shoegaze hallucination that conjures the East Bay dystopic/romantic energy of the mid-aughts while still remaining timeless.
Shop pick - the 13 minute hypnosis that is "Humanless"
John Lennon Broke Up Fluxus Tees - David Horvitz
Conceptual artist David Horvitz has flipped the misogynistic and minimizing trope of Yoko Ono being responsible for the breakup of the Beatles for this clever slogan tee. No longer villainizing Yoko and diminshing her life and work to this irrelevant circumstance, while also commenting on the general absurdity of the statement and culture that allows it to exist.
Available in black/white text and white/black text
Presenting two new publications from Bushwick-based reading room and independent publisher.
Blending poetry and memoir, conversation and performance theory, Black Body Amnesia: Poems and Other Speech Acts enlivens a personal archive of visual and verbal offerings written and organized by poet, performance artist, educator, and curator Jaamil Olawale Kosoko. Inspired by Audre Lorde’s concept of biomythography, Kosoko mixes personal history, biography, and mythology to tell a complex narrative rooted in a queer, Black, self-defined, and feminist imagination.
Shala Miller's Tender Noted is a meditation on the intersection of desire, mourning, and listening to one’s skin while coming to understand the practice of love. This interdisciplinary work brings together images from Miller’s filmic and photographic practice, informed by and given voice to by Miller’s writing. The book’s organizing principle is the echo: between text and image and between bodies and the stages, rooms, and affects they inhabit.
Gato Negro Ediciones
One of my favorite booths at SFABF. Based in Mexico City, Gato Negro Ediciones is "the collision of collective impetuses and critical perversions that shaped as an independent publishing house since 2013. Armed with a risograph machine, it’s members and a mutant group of authors, Gato Negro seeks to spread materials they consider urgent in the context of a collapsing era."
Such topics include critiques on productivity, digital reproductions in art and colonial patriarchy.
Impeccable design and pocket book size offered in both spanish and english translations. Was particularly shook by the eloquent and powerful poem, Chicas blancas muy blancas (Very White White Girls) by Mariana Rodríguez.
Back cassette catalog of Oakland's Freaks now in! Outsider experimental transmissions from the Bay's underground and beyond featuring releases by Silvery Bodies, NP, Nothing Band, Butaca, Snake and Cooper Casale.
Andrew Kodama Tees
Andrew Kodama is a Japanese-American artist born and raised in the East Bay Area. An educator, community organizer, and multidisciplinary artist - Andrew is interested in working alongside others to cultivate spaces for communal growth, experimentation, and collective healing.
These shirts designed by Andrew are hand-screened and the dyed pieces were done by hand using natural indigo.
NOSEI SUN ROOM represents space for growth, healing, and reflection. A central part of this practice asks: What is the life we want to build for ourselves and those we love? What is the future we can imagine for our people? What are we doing in our day to day to make this future tangible?
Neuro Fuzzy is an independent press based in Berkeley & Mexico City edited by Ellen Freeman and Sharada Tolton, publishing zines & books to open up your reality. Pleased to now offer a copy of each issue of their journal, Syms, which highlights art and writing about symbiosis and human cooperation. In addition we are also offering copies of a tender riso print from Rooftop Garden Cult (Sharada Tolton).

Happy to share new a selection from this limited edition imprint focused on expanded forms of sound and visual arts run by Rose Lazar and Rob Lowe out of Brooklyn. Always unique, always wonderfully presented. “Infinite Resources” collects brief sound experiments onto lathe cut and reprint of a zine produced at Skowhegan by Nikita Gale. “felt real black might delete later” transfers a poem and three images produced in response to the summer 2020 protests by Daniel Marcellus Givens to a large-format tabloid newsprint. “Spontaneous Presence” and “Imaginary Buildings highlight two artists working outside of their known media: ceramicist Angel Oloshove with a series of monoprints and fashion designer Shane Gabier (Creatures of the Wind) documenting their ceramics practice.

DREAM RADIO @ OPAF 5 (SAN PEDRO)
For OPAF, Cone Shape Top will revisit Dream Radio, a project initially presented as bodyworkbodywork at OPAF 2019 in San Pedro. Dream Radio showcased the work of over 20 international artists working in a wide variety of sound in a site-specific location. For 2022 we plan to expand on this vision, presenting another immersive and surreal listening experience in San Pedro, (9/17-9/18).
We are seeking submissions of recorded sound (max length 5 minutes) to play as part of this program. Open to all sonic transmissions (music, sound art, spoken word, field recordings, demos, interviews, and anything else that you can think of). All submissions will be included, please share!
