Literacy for All in 2020

Happy New Year! Decoding Dyslexia Maryland would like to thank you for your support for students and for your continued efforts to address dyslexia in Maryland. We look forward to another year filled with advocacy, networking, learning, and opportunities to share how equitable practices for reading benefit all students.

This month we will send out several emails with Dyslexia Advocacy Day program details, registration materials, action alerts, and legislative updates. We will also provide a Guide to Advocacy Day. No previous experience or past participation is required. Students are also welcomed and encouraged to attend and participate in a special youth advocacy session.

Also look for the Eventbrite registration later this week on  The program will include information on the Reading and Dyslexia Handbook legislation of 2020 and information sessions designed specifically for educators & parents on strong screening, instruction and intervention practices.

Dyslexia Advocacy Day is on February 20, 2020!

On Thursday, February 20, 2020, Decoding Dyslexia Maryland will host the 6th annual Dyslexia Advocacy Day in Annapolis. Please note the 2/20/20 date and disregard previous Save the Date Announcements in the December DDMD Newsletter.

With your support, we reached our 2019 legislative goal with the passage of the Ready to Read Act. Please help us make 2020 the year where instructional equity is achieved across Maryland. Implementing the tenets of the Ready to Read Act with fidelity puts Maryland closer to a world class educational system.

Maryland's elected officials support educational and instructional equity, early interventions for reading, and fiscally prudent investments that prevent reading failure. Join DDMD and our elected officials in supporting education initiatives this legislative session.

A Message from Our Community Partner Coordinator

Dyslexia Advocacy Day Needs Your Support!
We couldn't have a successful Dyslexia Advocacy Day without the generosity and participation of our Community Partners! The annual event brings together parents, teachers, students, policy makers, and community leaders from across the state.
  •  Are you a business, lawyer, advocate, tutor, school, or other related nonprofit service, agency or organization?
  •  Do you have an interest in literacy instruction in Maryland Public Schools and/or have an interest in helping students who struggle to read and students with dyslexia?
  • If so, we hope you can join us as a Community Partner for our 2020 Dyslexia Advocacy Day entitled: "Literacy for All: Equitable Practices for Reading".
By contributing $50 or more, you can display your organization's information at an individual Community Partner Table (30 x 23) at the event. You will have an opportunity to connect with attendees and share your materials. We will also display your organization's logo on event signage, DDMD communications, and website. Space is limited.

If you would like to be a Community Partner please contact Jaclyn Paris at

The deadline for Community Partner Registration is February 1, 2020.

How to Support the Literacy For All Efforts and Implementation of the Ready to Read Act
Over the course of the legislative session which begins January 8 and ends on April 6, we will need you to share your personal dyslexia story with your state Delegates & Senators in Annapolis. Dyslexia Advocacy Day (February 20) is one excellent opportunity to do this. You can write, call and/or schedule a visit to their state or local office. DDMD will provide letter templates in upcoming emails.
Here are several actions that can be taken to ensure the equitable reading practices and literacy for all remains a priority.
Connect with your local chapter leaders to learn about meetings in your county.
