On Thursday, February 20, 2020, Decoding Dyslexia Maryland will host the 6th annual Dyslexia Advocacy Day in Annapolis. This year, Literacy for All, is a FREE event by Decoding Dyslexia Maryland with content provided by the National Center on Improving Literacy (NCIL).

The Reading & Dyslexia Handbook bill has dropped!


The bills, HB 718 and SB 575, are sponsored by Del. Eric Luedtke & Sen. Katie Frye Hester. DDMD appreciates their support for schools and families who work with striving readers and students with dyslexia.The legislation is an investment in pulling the best practices for reading and dyslexia in a handbook that is accessible to all.

DDMD Chapter Events Near You! 
DDMD Chapters across the state host meetings, speakers, and simulations. Local leaders also collaborate with school districts and non-profit organizations to offer free events to families and educators. All are welcome and invited to attend. For more information, please contact DDMD or those listed on event materials.  
  • Tuesday February 11, 2020  Decoding DyslexiaMD-Harford County along with HCPS Partners for Success is hosting a FREE workshop for parents and educators. Register today for Dyslexia: A Roadmap and come learn about dyslexia and screening. See announcement below.
  • Wednesday, February 12, 2020 Members of Decoding Dyslexia Howard County and HCPSS Staff will present information on struggling readers, dyslexia and Ready to Read Act implementation. See below for the announcement.
  • Tuesday, February 18, 2020 Decoding Dyslexia MD-Frederick County is hosting a speaker at the Urbana Regional Library. Come to the small conference room to hear Barbara Luborsky from Way to Grow speak about Dysgraphia. She will discuss specific ways parents can work with their child. Please RSVP as there are only 30 spots available. Snow day is February 25th at the same time.
  • Thursday, February 20, 2020 Decoding DyslexiaMD-Montgomery County is hosting a meeting with a guest speaker. Come learn All About Assessment. Dr. Lindsey Dogali, licensed clinical psychologist, will discuss the assessment process and the critical elements that should be included when looking to understand your child. Dr. Dogali specializes in assessment of dyslexia and other learning disabilities (ADHD, executive functioning) and anxiety and related social/emotional concerns. Chapter meetings take place at the Siena School in Silver Spring, MD and begin at 7pm.

  • What is your district using for reading interventions? Read the 2018-2019 Specialized Intervention Reports by County. These reports are submitted by each school district and published by MSDE as required by SB1. Link to website with all reports.  
  • "The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) contracted WestEd to conduct a study regarding program quality and adequate funding levels for students with disabilities comprising three components: (1) an assessment of MSDE technical assistance for local school systems and public agencies (LSS/PAs) and the Maryland IEP process; (2) a description of current Maryland special education revenue, expenditure, and staffing patterns and a review of international and national best practices; and (3) recommendations on the cost to establish adequate funding for special education." 2020 Live Chat Series on Facebook

The Reading League in Pennsylvania has planned a series of Live Facebook chats on their page. The organization's mission "is to advance the science of reading."  On the Facebook page, the group will post articles, blogs, book recommendations and other content related to to the selected topic leading up to a Live Chat. On the evening of the date of the Live Chat, the group will post discussion questions starting at 7:00 PM EST and begin the chat. 

This month's Live Chat will be on Wednesday, February 5th from 7-8 pm.  Topic: "What the PH!"

It is so essential to have a clear understanding of these terms and instructional practices and their contribution to skilled reading. We need to be speaking the same accurate language! It will be a PHUN (did you get that? :)) conversation so please plan on joining!"
