Monthly News at Sandpoint Church of the Nazarene

View this email in your browser
Dear Church Family,
The month of May is a busy one and I want to invite you to get involved in some key areas:

National Day of Prayer:  Thursday, May 4th we will join others from our community as we gather in Farmin Park (where the downtown farmer’s market is held) at noon and pray as a community together.  The goal is to have hundreds of people this year take time out of their lunch hour and join together in praying for our community and our nation.  Music begins at 11:30 and then the service and prayer will start at noon.  We would love to have you come join and show our community that we love them and pray for them.

Mother’s Day:  We will celebrate the women of our church.  We have something special to share, in honor of the women of our church.  Come Mother’s day and hear more.  Our preaching time will continue in our “Ashes to Fire” series.

Baby Bottle Boomerang:  Each year from Mother’s day to Father’s day we partner with “Life Choices Pregnancy Center” and pass out baby bottles to fill with coins.  As a part of your missional giving we already send monthly support to this worthy ministry that is helping and supporting young mother’s make good choices for their baby.  This is an additional and fun way to give support.

Rummage Sale May 19& 20:  Don’t forget that Pastor Carlie is still needing donations for the Rummage sale.  If you can’t donate then be sure and come buy someone else’s donations.  All the proceeds help underwrite the cost of summer camp for our students and to help students who are attending the Nazarene Youth Conference this summer.  The proceeds also go to support our Celebrate Recovery ministry.    We believe in summer camp and mission trips and believe God can use this special time to shape and form the kids and teens from our church in significant ways.  I desire is that any kid who goes to camp isn’t held back by the cost of camp.  The cost of camp is significant, but far less than any sports camp, invention camp, arts camp, etc, that many of our kids attend and eternal gains are far greater.  Celebrate Recovery is making an impact on people as they find support and freedom through Jesus.

Final Wednesday Night BBQ  and Work Night and Softball on May 24: Our Wednesday night family night will come to a close for this season.  We are planning on having an all ages BBQ and fun night.  Each of us are so blessed by the facility that we enjoy, we are asking that we would all come and give an hour doing some spring cleaning and sprucing up the outside.  After that we will play softball and you are invited to play or watch the fun. I am so thankful for all the teachers, childcare workers, cooks and helpers that have made this another great season.  There will be some ongoing Wednesday night actives as well as other activities throughout the summer.  Stay tuned….

Missionaries from Kenya:  Rod and Sarah Reed serving as missionaries in Kenya will be with us on Sunday morning May 28th.  You won’t want to miss an opportunity to hear how God is at work in Africa through the Church of the Nazarene.

May is a great time to get involved in the life of the church.  Build relationships, find a place of significance to serve and plug in.

Do Something Eternal,
Pastor Chad

There is a small prize for everyone who participates.

Rummage Sale Fundraiser

Our annual fundraiser raises money for kids and teens to pay for camp, Nazarene Youth Conference (NYC), and other church events, as well as for Celebrate Recovery to attend their conferences. Everyone 3rd grade and up is welcome to work at the rummage sale. The money is divided per volunteer per hour, so the more hours you work, the more money you make! You may choose to earn money for your own “student account” or on behalf of someone else!

This year, we are also adding a bake sale! We will begin accepting donations of good stuff for the sale, and single serve bake sale items on Monday May 15th.  If you need someone to come by your home to pick up heavy donations such as furniture, or exercise equipment please speak with Pastor Carlie to schedule a pick-up time. We have learned over the years that tires, T.Vs, and old entertainment centers rarely sell, if in doubt about a donation, please ask!

You can begin earning money as early as Wednesday May 17th when we will begin sorting and staging the items. The sale is from 8am-2pm Friday May 19th through Saturday May 20th. There is further opportunity to earn money by going to people’s homes to pick up large/heavy items as well as by working after the sale ends by clearing out everything from the sale and re-setting the church for Sunday.

For Children:

Children’s Church – (1- 4th grade) Sundays at 10:30 am service.

Let’s be honest, kids are all sorts of bonkers! They love acting a little crazy from time to time, and now they get to do it at church (in moderation, of course). During “That’s Bonkers,” kids will get to play an off-the-wall game that lets them be their bonkers selves while discovering the last part of the Big Bible Story. More than that, kids will hear how God is bonkers-in-love with us and wants us to share His love with the world through the good news of Jesus.

Kinder Church - (Pre and K) Sundays at the 10:30 am service.

Quiet on the set—it’s movie making time! During “Lights, Camera, Action!” the preschoolers will give the performance of a lifetime as they act out scenes from Bible stories about the early church. When shooting wraps up, they’ll have discovered that the church is our supporting cast, but Jesus is the real star of the show!

New Creation Nursery - (0-2 years old) Sundays at 10:30am

Children’s Bulletins are available at our live services. Children can enter to win a monthly ice cream drawing by completing their bulletin, signing their name on it, and giving it to me at the end of each service.

Winners get to invite a friend to join pastor Carlie for ice cream!

Vacation Bible School

Kid’s Adventure Camp 3rd-7th grade

All kids (going into 3rd grade through going into 7th grade) are invited to Riverview Bible Camp for GLOW:  Go Light Our World!

For teens:

Sundays –Teens 7th-12th grade are invited to “Snazzy Sundays” during the 9:00 am service to our youth group small group! There will be coffee, and occasionally donuts, and an opportunity to dive deeper into the content we learn about on Wednesdays. Don’t miss out on this extra time of fellowship each week! This month, the NYC meetings with the devotionals and conversations for NYC in particular are May 21st and 28th.

Wednesdays – All teens 7th-12th grade are welcome! During May, we begin with dinner at 5:30, then at 6:00 youth group begins with games, snacks, and a series by “Grow” called “On the Flip Side” which is a 2 week series on Social Justice. On May 10th we will have a guest speaker from our church Jeanine Pilarski and her friend who work together at the Jonah Project to help victims of human trafficking and educate people on the signs of grooming. On the 17th we will begin work on the Rummage Sale, and on the 24th and 31st we will participate in the all church activities (see above under Family Night).

Highschool students are invited for deeper study and conversation at ADVANCE, our high school only small group that meets at 4:45 every Wednesday through the 10th.

Our Theme for 2023 SNAZZY G. Youth Ministry

This is going to be a big year in our youth group! Starting with winter retreat (January 2023), we are going to learn what qualities God has given us that qualify us to continue Jesus’ mission found in Luke 4. We will be wrestling with sin and apathy in the “Not A Fan” series (January-February). This summer fifteen of us are going to go to Nazarene Youth Conference where we will learn how to share the good news with others out of the overflow of love we receive from God. We will watch season 3 of “The Chosen” during which Jesus calls the last of the twelve disciples, and trains and sends them into ministry. And we will tackle big topics such as relationships, doubt, social justice, and daily discipleship. But the main thread, through it all, is that wherever we go, and whoever we are becoming, Jesus asks us to follow Him.

Until Next Month

Thank you for taking note of these dates, and for including us in your family! If you ever have any questions about Family Ministry or would like to volunteer with kids or youth or for a specific event, please speak with Pastor Carlie.

Women's Ministry Corner

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." Hebrews 10:24

Ladies, check out the poster in the foyer and sign up to attend our annual Spring Tea on Saturday, May 13 from 12 to 2 p.m. This is always a special event for women and girls. Come and bring a friend. It'll be lots of fun with music, food, games, a skit and an encouraging word. We are also inviting 12 ladies to decorate a table! Who knows? You might win a prize!

You may have noticed that Women's Ministry did NOT hold our Recruitment Sunday as promised in last month's newsletter. However, we are still very eager to involve all you ladies in planning our activities. So...coming soon, to a foyer near you...you WILL have the opportunity to learn more about us...and maybe sign up to be on a committee! We have so many fun activities throughout the year and would love to involve as many of you as possible in making them happen. Stay tuned!

That said, the reason we postponed our Recruitment Sunday was because we had a much more important and exciting event to celebrate! After more than four years of studying hard and taking online classes through Nazarene Bible College, our own Pastor Janine was ORDAINED! We are so proud of her and know she will accomplish great things for the kingdom. She has already made a huge difference in our lives and in Women's Ministry. Congratulations, Janine!

Beginning June 19 at 10:00 a.m. at the church, Beth Hoerth will be leading the study "Abide" by Jen Wilkins. In this 10-session Bible study on the letters of 1, 2, and 3 John, Jen Wilkin helps you see how two thousand years later, John's words call to Christians in similar challenges to recall a great salvation and to abide in the truth. How can we hold onto assurance of our faith? How can we discern the truth from a lie? How can we know God loves us? In these three short letters, the apostle John reminds an early church facing division, deception, and doubt to hold fast to what they know and to live like they believe it. And he reminds us, as well. Sign up today at the welcome center in the foyer.

Our next Ladies' Breakfast will be Monday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. at Tango Café in the Umpqua Bank Building (formerly Columbia Bank), 414 Church St. This is a fun and relaxing time in which we talk, laugh and get to know each other better. All ladies are welcome and encouraged to attend!

"This is what I have asked God for you: that you will be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love and that you have the rich experience of knowing Christ with real certainty and clear understanding" Colossians 2:2

LIFE CHOICES PREGNANCY CENTER

In two weeks, May 14, it will be Mother's Day, but that's not all.  It will also be the day that our Baby Bottles will be distributed after each service in the foyer.  There will be a table set up for you to sign a bottle out and take it home and begin filling it up with  coins, or currency or checks.  And while you are filling your bottle we hope it would be a good reminder to say a prayer for each mother and baby we will be able to help through your gift.   On Father's Day, June 18, return the bottle.  Whatever you give will make a difference in saving the lives of unborn children.  Last year our church raised $3,250.36 for the Pregnancy Center through your generous donations.

God bless you for your help.

"You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.  You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in Your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed."
Psalm 139:15-16

Celebrate Recovery Ministry Sandpoint Area

Hello from the Celebrate Recovery Ministry. We are blessed to see the ministry grow as God continues to work in each one of our lives. We have witnessed amazing changes as we journey together on our Road to Recovery. We have had some new people come in to check out our program and begin to share their journey and begin to work on their lives this month. We have also had some individuals return and we are honored to walk their journey with them. It is amazing to see God at Work. We Praise the Lord for all His provisions and the patience of all our participants during all the challenges and situations of life.

We are excited to work with Pastor Carlie, the Youth Group and children’s ministry to raise ministry fund through the church at the Annual Rummage Sale May 19th and 20th. We are looking to pick up donations and help with all areas of the sale.

This is a Prayer we use often during our Road to Recovery.

PRAYER FOR SERENITY
God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardship as a pathway to peace;
taking, as Jesus did,
this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it;
trusting that You will make all things right
if I surrender to Your will;
so that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen.

Teaching Schedule May

  • May 5 – Testimony
  • May 12 - Inventory
  • There are five tools to help you prepare your inventory:
1.      Memorize Isaiah 1:18 (tlb): “Come, let’s talk this over!” says the Lord; “no matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can take it out and make you as clean as freshly fallen snow. Even if you are stained as red as crimson, I can make you white as wool!”
2.      Read the “balancing the scale verses” on page 27 of Participant’s Guide 2!
3.     Keep your inventory balanced. List both the good and the bad!
4.     Continue to develop your support team.
5.     Pray continuously.

Don’t wait to start your inventory. Don’t let any obstacle stand in your way. If you don’t have a sponsor yet, talk to someone tonight! Set a time and place and get busy! You can do it!
  • May 19 - Testimony
  • May 26 - Spiritual Inventory (Part 1)
As you start to work on your spiritual inventory, remember two things. First, in Isaiah 1:18 (tlb) God says, “No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can take it out and make you as clean as freshly fallen snow.” Second, I can’t say it enough—Keep your inventory balanced. List the positive new relationships that you have, the areas of your life that you have been able to turn over to God, how your attitude has improved since you have been in recovery, the ways you have been able to step out of your denial into God’s truth.
  • Relationships with Others
  • Priorities in Your Life
  • Your Attitude
  • Your Integrity
Our Celebrate Recovery program is a 12 Step Program that is Bible based with scripture and we look to Jesus Christ as our higher power. We also have 8 Principal to live by that are also Bible based. CAREmunity:

Hello Church!  The use of these pronouns in this scripture fully captures MY attention as I continually pray about CAREmunity: "God is not unjust; HE will not forget YOUR work and the love YOU have shown HIM as YOU have helped HIS people and continue to help THEM." Hebrews 6:10.

Wow! With spring finally here, we have new opportunities for loving God BY loving His people. Isn't that amazing?

GARDENING: 1. We have opportunities to "grow" faith and friendships by spending time together helping Bob Mahorney renew the Lakeside Assisted Living garden. 2. We have seniors and others who would love to work together with us outdoors at their homes. Sign up at the CAREmunity table (put your name with the word "Garden" in the pitcher) and we'll arrange a time that works for you.

MENTORING:  The Sunday May 21st Senior Potluck (after second service) will focus on bringing seniors and teens together for prayer and support throughout the summer. Are you 60 or +? Plan to join in. We'll have everything you need for this project.

FRIENDSHIP COMPANIONS: There are folks in our church who greatly benefit from weekly and monthly visits, texts and phone calls. Sign up at the CAREmunity table (put your name in the pitcher with the word Friendship) and we'll match you with a friend who enjoys the same activities, snacks, and/or coffee/tea as you.

OTHER IDEAS? CAREmunity works to bring the church together, as a caring community of givers and receivers, focused especially on long-term caregivers, persons with long-term diagnoses, seniors and others who might be isolated or a bit overwhelmed by life's daily challenges. Do you have a need? Or a way to help? Let us know!  CAREmunity leaders: Deni Williamson, Kathy Hedahl, Anne Marie Norling, Kelli Cline .

“Family News” is a place just for you.   We would love to have you share what is going on in your life that you want others to know about. “Family News” will come out each month in the newsletter.  If you want to have something included, you can email the church office by the 25.
