Welcome to the Plair newsletter! In this issue, we introduce a new product for real-time aerosol detection and analysis that you can discover at Meteorological Technology World Expo 2016 in Madrid. And, you'll learn about our recent project on monitoring air quality in Switzerland, where we are testing a network of these instruments this year.

Rapid-E debuts as the new real-time airborne particle identifier

We are pleased to reveal our latest innovation, which enables more accurate and comprehensive environmental monitoring. Our real-time airborne particle identifier, called "Rapid-E", is the second-generation Particle Analyzer PA-300. Rapid-E reliably detects and counts numerous airborne particles simultaneously and rapidly – pollen, fungal spores, air pollution, and even bacteria. It offers revolutionary performance, high sensitivity, and a broad range of detection, opening many applications in environmental monitoring that require precise and instantaneous identification.

An extended version of PA-300, Rapid-E has higher sensitivity to smaller particles (down to 0.5 micrometers [μm]), while maintaining the same performance for particles of up to 100 μm. Rapid-E is not only more compact than PA-300, it is also more robust in its design, ensuring continuous and uninterrupted use both outdoors and indoors. Plair deploys the first network of its state-of-the-art instruments in Switzerland

Supported by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and in collaboration with the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss and with the Department of Environment, Transport and Agriculture of Geneva canton, Plair is installing a network of connected Rapid-E detectors to track pollen and air pollution with the same device. Apart from pollen species, the focus is on simultaneously and automatically measuring the most common particulate matter known to aggravate allergic and asthmatic symptoms: fine particles (PM2.5, PM10) and particles containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from road traffic and industrial emissions. We are deploying our stations in the cantons of Geneva, Vaud, and Ticino to continuously gather precise environmental data.

Plair’s instruments generate real-time information that helps partners disseminate more comprehensive data on air quality levels in Switzerland’s regions for allergy alerts. In the long term, solutions developed in this project will help cities more quickly determine and manage the sources of pollution, improving risk management related to respiratory diseases, hay fever, and asthma.

Plair to showcase Rapid-E at the World Expo in Madrid

Plair will demonstrate its new instrument this September in Madrid at Meteorological Technology World Expo 2016, the biggest global exhibition of its kind in Europe. The event focuses on forecasting, climate change, weather, hydrometeorological measurement technologies, and services for key decision makers within met offices, agriculture operations, military operations, and research institutes, among others. The World Expo attracts over 165 exhibiting companies and more than 2,500 attendees from over 70 countries.
