S4TP Celebrates

Dear Colleague,

We're pleased to announce the Winners of yesterday's Solutions for the Planet competition, which took place at Portcullis House, in Parliament.

First place was awarded to Vitaliite, a team from Quwwat Ul Islam School in Newham with their fantastic business selling illuminated water bottles for cyclists, which would have the added benefit of providing water charities in developing countries with donations, from their profits. The judges were particularly impressed with the extent to which they'd developed their concept and were ready to take it to market.

In second place were E-Waste, from Alderbrook School in Solihull, with their extensive business plan for a new kind of smart bin which would help families learn about what food they waste and make appropriate changes. The judges were particularly impressed with this teams confidence and detail.

In third place were Thermofield from Dixons City Academy in Bradford. This team had designed a camping stove of the future, with an interim solution for campsites - using small solar farms to power camping stoves on sites. The judges were particularly impressed with this teams adaptability of their idea, and the impact it could have in developing countries, where biomass and fossil fuels are often used to fuel cooking stoves and where there is a risk to Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

All the other teams did exceptionally well too and were all noted as winners for getting to the Finals (from over 500 Big Ideas initially created). A special recognition was also awarded to Hydro-Lock from St Bede's & St Joseph's for their innovative idea for retaining water in soil.
The event was kindly hosted by Emma Reynolds MP and supported by our business partners Balfour Beatty, Brammer, Buck & Hickman, IGEM, SGN and Tarmac. We would like to thank all our colleagues at these companies for their tireless commitment to supporting teams develop their big ideas, through mentoring.

We will be sharing more stories and photographs from the day throughout the week, so please follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook to find out more. Our Annual Report will also be available during the summer.

Yours sincerely,
