GO Virginia Region 6 Seeks Project Ideas for Economic Resiliency and Recovery
GO Virginia Region 6 has $800,000 to invest in the regional economy on projects that help the region recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

GO Virginia Region 6 is seeking applications that support and serve existing businesses, priority traded sectors, and essential businesses, including the health care system and tourism. 

Examples of projects include:
  • Setting up an internship program for lab techs (VT Workforce Training, COVID-19 Response)
  • Building a website focused on technical assistance and reopening guidance for small businesses (Forward RVA)
  • Support and upskill un/underemployed workers with free COVID-related and skills training to
  • help businesses succeed by ensuring employees are well trained and able to address COVID related issues while allowing the sectors to rebound more quickly (Virginia Restaurant and Hotel Workforce COVID Recovery and Upskilling Program)

Germanna Community College hosts 250 children in a summer STEM camp
Germanna Community College hosted a week-long summer camp for 250 kids ages 7-14 in partnership with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office as part of their Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office Summer Camp series to introduce kids to the engineering process through various STEM activities.

GO Virginia is working with GCC on a two-year Tech Talent Pipeline project that will create engineering, IT, computer science, and cyber pathways programs at Germanna for middle and high school students and adults entering the workforce.

Registration now open for University of Mary Washington Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) prep class
GO Virginia Region 6 approved $110,000 in funding in May 2019 to the University of Mary Washington (UMW) to train students in the Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) certification program.

UMW has utilized GO Virginia funding to pay for instructor salaries, course material for students, and marketing efforts. Contributed match from the Chesapeake Bay Consortium Workforce Development Board and several local jurisdictions paid for tuition waivers for students to attend the program a little to no cost.

There are currently 60 jobs open, across 30 different employers, that want employees to have the CISSP certification.

Registration is now open for the Fall 2021 12-week session beginning in September or a one-week boot camp at the end of August. To learn more visit UMW’s CISSP page:
The Region 6 Council met July 26th. Below is a summary of key agenda items.
Presentation on Closed Projects
  • Fredericksburg Cyber and Smart Tech
    • The Council approved the "Market Assessment Report" and released funding for the implementation project, "Rapp Region Entrepreneurship".
  • Middle Peninsula Seafood and Ag E-Market
    • The BayDirect app was released. This app connects fishermen and ag producers with customers who wish to purchase their products. The app is now available on the Google and Apple app stores. Learn more here:
Growth and Diversification Plan Update
  • Region 6 staff summarized the outcomes of the Growth and Diversification Plan Stakeholder Engagement Sessions. Key outcomes include better engaging the Council in conversations with localities; prioritizing sites based on metrics developed; focusing on internship training programs; and creating career pathways programming.

Welcome Anne Marie Kluempen!

Anne Marie is the Program Coordinator for GO Virginia and the Fredericksburg Regional Continuum of Care at GWRC.

Prior to her current role, Anne Marie served as the CoC VISTA at GWRC through the Virginia Housing Alliance AmeriCorps VISTA program and worked as the Housing Case Manager for domestic violence survivors at Empowerhouse. Anne Marie received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Mary Washington.
