Greetings from the Festival!

Our programme brochure is now ready for download. It has details of events in venues across Orkney, from the Phoenix Cinema and Orkney Theatre to St Magnus Cathedral and the Earl’s Palace; and the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness. There’s also a new strand of later-evening events in the Orkney Club.
There are walks and workshops, and part of the festival can be accessed online through our YouTube channel, or direct from the event description on the Festival website.
Topics range from new insights into the mystery of animal navigation and the homing ability of pigeons, to the latest research on the origins of Orkney’s ancient 6-rowed barley bere. We’ll be showing spectacular images of the blazing surface of the sun and looking at the movements of the moon over the Ring of Brodgar. There’s stories of Arctic whalers and Antarctic rescues, a look back to the days of early radio and crystal sets, and the story of the Shetland salt fish industry and the cultural links that it opened across the north. We'll also be taking the ferry to Hoy.
There’s the latest new of genetics research to help new vaccines, and a new approach to land regeneration which brings environment and wildlife and people together. There’s also music inspired by the sounds of renewable energy, and music inspired by astronomy. And running through the whole programme is the island setting of Orkney with stories and insights and outings and views across the sea to the horizon.

We are looking forward to seeing you!

All the best from the Festival team!
