Growing Farm Food and Family Fun

When Tom and Tamra first opened up the retail market in 1985, their dream was to farm together as a family in a sustainable and creative way. Their idea was to grow a variety of crops, besides the MacIntosh apples they were already successful at, and invite the public to see the farm itself. Diversification started with growing tomatoes between the rows of apples, and today, nearly 35 years later, we are harvesting a whole variety of crops from May until the end of October! Going in so many directions makes us crazy at times – it’s a lot to balance on both the growing and retail side, but it also spreads out our risk and hopefully makes us an exciting place to visit too!

The last two weeks at the farm have been rather extraordinary. Behind the scenes there is a so much going on! From construction of a new cooler for apple storage, to digging a new well, to battling army worms and a destructive hail storm, to introducing new products in the Bakery and Gift Shop, to starting up our new Kettle Corn machine, to harvesting a bumper crop of strawberries. Diversification has truly kept us on our toes this June!

In just a few short days we will be celebrating Father’s Day. How will you celebrate? Our family will be working during the day (hopefully allowing you to treat your dad to a day at the farm), and then we’ll have a family dinner in the evening. I am blessed to have many amazing men to be grateful for: My grandpa Bob, whom I had the privilege of growing up with, and my Grandpa Quast, both generous, kind, hardworking, and God-honouring men. My own Dad, Tom, who taught us right from wrong and was never too busy for his kids and now his grandkids, my husband Kevin who is an amazingly patient, funny, energetic Dad to his three eager boys, and his dad too, Ron Shaw, who brings patience to a level we Davisons didn’t even know about, and he is forever-gracious with his daughter-in-law. I am spoiled to know such wonderful men! (image: 3 generations of Davison's - Lance, Tom, and Bob)

This Sunday, from 11 am – 4 pm, we are firing up the donut machine (and the new kettle corn machine!) and are excited to treat dads of all ages to a free Apple Cider Donut and a free Orchard Tour on the Johnny Popper Tractor Train. We will also be setting up a few new lawn games and activities in the Crazy Cow Kids Corral.

We are thoroughly enjoying the strawberries right now. They are red right through and incredibly juicy and sweet. My boys did a “Kid’s Recipe” this week – a seasonal twist on a classic recipe for kids to make for their dad this Father’s Day weekend. Check it out!

We look forward to celebrating this weekend with you. Keep an eye on social media because soon the sweet cherry harvest will begin.
