What's Been Happening at the Capitol

Straws Upon Request

On January 29, 2019, I introduced legislation which would allow restaurants to distribute single-use plastic beverage straws to customers upon request. The bill would not apply to the following situations:
  • The use of a self-serve straw dispenser.
  • A customer's order of food through a drive-through window or delivery.
  • Prepackaged food that is; filled sealed or packaged before the food service establishment received the prepackaged food at its retail premises.
By enacting this legislation, it will save restaurants money while limiting the environmental impact of plastic straws on the world's oceans.

Jordan Casteel Unveils Her Art at the Denver Art Museum
On January 31st, Denver born Jordan Casteel unveiled her first major museum exhibition Returning the Gaze at the Denver Art Museum. The exhibit displays nearly 30 original pieces by Casteel painted between 2014 and 2018. Casteel's collection can be seen until August 18th, 2019.
SCFD Day!

On February 5th, we celebrated The Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) Day at the Capitol. The SCFD brought several birds of prey including a bald eagle and hawks from the Denver Zoo. Swallow Hill Music Entertainment made an appearance letting employees and visitors try their hand at several musical instruments. The SCFD supports arts and cultural programs in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson counties and is a Colorado cultural treasure.

Currently, the Teacher's strike is set to begin on Monday. The District and DCTA are meeting as I write this, should they reach a resolution tonight, the strike will be averted. The Governor's office has decided not to intervene, understanding that this is a local matter and we believe that both sides can come to a resolution. However, if the strike is prolonged due to bad faith or a breakdown of the current negotiations process from either side, the state may need to assert jurisdiction to resolve the dispute. I wish DPS and DCTA the best of luck in negotiations tonight.
Sincerely,
Susan Lontine
