Happy Thanksgiving!

This year, Thanksgiving will be different. With 1 out of every 49 Coloradans currently infected with Covid-19, we must do our part to meet in groups of 10 or less and wear masks around those we spend the day with.
If you have chosen not to meet with your family and want to keep busy, there are volunteer opportunities around Denver to help feed those in need.

Note: COVID-related restrictions may limit volunteer opportunities because of the need to socially distance; check with organizations in advance for their health and safety practices.

Here are three organizations you can volunteer for in Denver

The Table

The organization's to-go meals will be whipped up by chef Andrew Curtis Forlines and available for pick-up on Thanksgiving Day. Families can purchase meals for themselves, or they can buy meals for community members who are struggling. The meals will include roast turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes with turkey gravy, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, dinner rolls with butter, and pumpkin pie. Dinners can be ordered from the Table's website for $20 per person. The Table is also looking for ten volunteers to assist with distribution from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Denver Rescue Mission’s Turkey Drive

To help, you can donate $15 to $20 (the approximate price of a turkey) online. The organization also encourages you to start your own fundraiser for donations and to spread the word.

Samaritan House

For the fourteenth year, Samaritan House is pairing with Sheraton Denver Downtown and Westin Denver Downtown hotels to serve Thanksgiving dinner for those experiencing homelessness from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on November 26 at the Denver shelter at 2301 Lawrence Street. The shelter provides residents with food and board daily and connects them with social service assistance, educational opportunities, referrals for employment and housing, and medical care. This Thanksgiving, Samaritan House hopes to serve at least 350 residents — both staying at the facility and women residing at the Holy Rosary shelter. Both hotel staff and volunteers will serve the meals. To sign up to help, email Samaritan House volunteer coordinators at shdvolunteers@ccdenver.org.

Being successful during the Safer-at-Home phase has four main components:

Stay at home most of the time.
People who are 11 years and older are required to wear a covering over their noses and mouths.
Stay at home as much as possible.
Practice good hygiene. ...
Connect with neighbors and loved ones virtually.
For seniors & those with chronic health conditions, it means staying at home unless absolutely necessary.
Stepping up testing, containment, and tracing.
Wearing masks at all times when in public.

Legislature to Meet for Special Session

On November 30th, the state legislature will convene for a special session. Colorado is facing an unprecedented spike in covid infections, and our people, businesses, and schools are suffering.

We cannot wait for Congress to act. This special session will focus on:

helping small businesses with an aid package and tax relief.
rental and mortgage assistance.
support childcare providers.
ensure that children have access to remote learning by expanding broadband access to students and educators.

I know this has been difficult, but Coloradans are tough, and we will get through this together.
