Weekly construction update

Construction activities are continuing along the City to Gungahlin light rail corridor. Here is the latest with what is happening on the project.

Gungahlin to Mitchell

(Zones 1,2 &3)

Hibberson Street will be closing permanently to vehicular traffic from Kate Crace Street to Gungahlin Place next week from Monday 10 April 2017 in order to start work on the Gungahlin light rail terminus. This is an exciting period of construction that will see the transformation of Gungahlin Town Centre.

To allow for these works, it is important for public transport users to note that buses will be diverted around Hibberson Street and a number of bus stops will be permanently closed.

Significant progress is also being made at the top of Flemington Road between Kate Crace Street and Well Station Drive, where you will see crews conducting earthworks and installing base layers in preparation for the laying of track form later in the year.

Residents and road users in the area are advised that out of hours work will occur at Kate Crace Street throughout the week.

Mitchell to Dickson

(Zones 3 &4)

Towards Mitchell, Canberrans will notice the landscape changing on Flemington Road as crews work to strip top soil, conduct road and median widening works in preparing the light rail alignment.

The relocation and installation of utilities will also progress in this area throughout the week. Crews are continuing the cable cut over at various locations between Sandford Street and Randwick Road. At the National Archives, you will see Canberra Metro installing a gas pipe and laying a water main between Sandford Street and Randwick Road.

Dickson to the City

(Zones 5 & 6)

As the tree removal program along Northbourne Avenue nears completion, crews are now well and truly getting stuck into ground works along the corridor. Following this work you will see Canberra Metro starting to lay base layers along the median for the laying of track later in the year.

For more information on the upcoming landscaping component of the project, check out our latest video on the Eucalypt mannifera trees out at Yarralumla Nursery that are to be planted along the regenerated Northbourne Avenue Boulevard. We went for a chat with the Nursery’s General Manager, Chris Ware.

  • Work on communication services at Ipima and Condamine intersection
  • Potholing investigation and underboring works at Elouera and Gould intersection
  • Various work on utilities at Antill and Mouat intersection.

General information

It is important for all Canberrans based along the corridor to note that out of hours work will be undertaken between 8pm to 6am from Sundays to Thursdays. Work will generally not occur on Friday and Saturday nights. Out of hours work may change depending on weather conditions and the nature of construction.
