Introduction

Construction activities are continuing along the City to Gungahlin light rail corridor. The Transport Canberra Light Rail Team are working to bring you relevant and engaging construction stories as we work towards delivering Canberra’s first light rail. Updates will be provided fortnightly.

Here is the latest with what is happening on the project over the next two weeks.

Gungahlin to Mitchell

(Zones 1, 2 & 3)

In Gungahlin, work has started on Hibberson Street and Canberra Metro have been working to remove pavers, install hoarding, disconnect and remove street lights and work on drainage lines.

At Kate Crace intersection, crews will be conducting work on water mains and further down the corridor preparation is underway for the laying of track slab. You will see more concrete blinding being laid in this area in preparation for the laying of final track slab in coming weeks.

Stop names announced

In other news, we are excited to announce the proposed stop names for light rail stage one!

The light rail City to Gungahlin corridor will contain 13 stops including a terminus at each end of the route. The names are proposed on a geographic basis to allow for ease of wayfinding across our city.

Have your say on light rail to Woden

Light rail enthusiasts may also be interested in contributing their ideas to the Light Rail Stage 2 to Woden consultation.

We are seeking your input on route options, stop locations, alignment and locations of interest in the corridor area. Your feedback will inform the future planning decisions for the ACT Government in delivering this city shaping project. Consultation closes on 12 June 2017.

Mitchell to Dickson

(Zones 3 & 4)

Towards Mitchell over the next couple of weeks, you will see crews continuing to relocate communication cables at Sandford Street intersection. Canberra Metro will also continue to work on water mains, gas pipes and sewers in this area between Sandford Street and Randwick Road.

Out of hours work began on Monday night this week in order for crews to continue work on water mains here. Work is expected to be complete in the first week of May.

General earthworks will continue throughout various sections of Flemington Road and the Federal Highway. You will see crews conducting utilities investigative works around Barton Highway in preparation for median widening later in the year.

The first concrete slabs for the maintenance and administration sheds have been poured at the light rail depot in Mitchell. Crews have also started to erect the steel frame for these buildings.
