Weekly construction update

Construction is continuing along the Gungahlin to the City light rail corridor. Here’s the latest on what’s happening over the next week.

Utilities relocation

In Gungahlin, crews will excavate and lay a pipe across Kate Crace intersection and work on connections to existing gas mains at Sapling and De Bortoli Streets.

In Mitchell, work relaying communication cables down Flemington Road will continue throughout the week between Lysaght Street and EPIC. Underboring work will be conducted at Well Station Drive and Randwick Road while down the street, crews will start identifying existing services and carry out potholing work in preparation for the installation of a water main at Sandford Street and Sullivans Creek. Between Sandford Street and Randwick Road crews will also complete trenching work and install pits. Towards the city, utilities relocations will continue along Northbourne Avenue with the installation of conduits, pits and pipes.

Ground works

Work on kerbs, drainage and earthworks will continue between Kate Crace Street and Manning Clarke Crescent this week. On various sections along Flemington Road, crews will strip top soil, conduct bulk excavation works and box out the median in preparation for the laying of rail later in the year. In preparation for this work you will also see crews relocating barriers.

Light rail depot

The trial planting site at Mitchell depot is on track with crews planting over the last month. Once complete, this site will help inform important decisions such as soil composition and planting methods for the Northbourne Avenue median landscaping project.

Testing also continues on the depot building footings in preparation for laying of slabs in the coming weeks.

Tree removal program

Work to remove approximately 120 trees that remain on Northbourne Avenue median is also moving forward and is set to be complete by the end of March. Recent damage sustained from storms and the deteriorating health of a number of remaining trees has led to the decision to bring forward the final phase of tree removals. This decision will enable Canberra Metro crews to work safely around construction sites.

Out of hours work

Out of hours activities this week include:
  • Kate Crace Street, works started Monday 27 February and will continue into next week.
  • Various locations along Flemington Road between Sandford Street and the Federal Highway throughout the week.
All out of hours work will be undertaken between 8pm to 6am from Sundays to Thursdays, with no work on Friday and Saturday nights. It is important to note that all out of hours work is subject to change of date depending on weather conditions and the nature of construction. We would like to thank all Canberrans in advance for their patience while we continue to deliver the first stage of Canberra’s light rail network.

General information

As work along the corridor continues, all road users are asked to be mindful of changed speed limits in construction zones.
