Upcoming Events
 
After a busy first half to the spring term we’ve taken advantage of the quieter second half to concentrate on preparations for our main event of the year - the School Summer fair. As it’s the weekend of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations, alongside our emergency and services theme, we have decided to add a Royal element to our fair with a street party layout and regal style refreshments. Please put the date in your diary now.
 
More details about the summer fair will follow next term, however if you happen to have a clear out over the Easter holidays please could we ask you to please put by any good quality toys, games, books, teddys and school uniform (washed please) as well as any suitable tombola prizes to donate to the summer fair? Donations boxes will be located around the school during the next term.

Update on Fundraising events:  

Bingo Night raised £200 profit for the Picnic Bench Fund
Congratulations to all our bingo winners and commiserations to those who didn’t win, however we hope you all enjoyed the evening nonetheless. Massive thanks to everyone who generously donated hot food and snacks for us to sell.
It can often be difficult to get volunteers to help run these events, so your support in not only attending the event but in also helping out on the night is very much appreciated.  Thank you finally to Mr McCance (dad to Molly and Megan in Yr3) who kindly purchased a software licence for us to use for the next bingo night.
 
Pancake races stacked up a profit of £80
Luckily the appalling weather didn’t put everyone off joining in with our pancake pandemonium. With focus and determination from the children, fierce competition amongst the dads and lots of laughs from the spectators, lots of fun was had by all.    
Thanks to the generosity of Amelie & Benoit’s dad our competitors enjoyed delicious French crepes which we sold alongside hot chocolate and marshmallows. Some of you will have seen that the ‘pancake races’ made the Horndean Post on two occasions. Check out our PTA notice board in the playground if you missed them. Due to the positive feedback we received we hope this will become an annual event.

Spending


During Spring term 1 the PTA has made the following contributions:
£1425 (25% of total cost) for the Stubbington Trip
£215 for 6 sets of waterproofs and wellies for KS2
£475 for Openbox Christmas Show
£200 for Oak library blocks

School disco tops £600 profit

Our popular school discos were both well attended and enjoyed by the children. Many thanks to all the staff and parents who helped make this event possible. 
 
Following feedback we’ve decided to give children the opportunity to put in ‘appropriate song requests’ prior to the event, which will be passed on to our resident DJ. We must say a huge thank you to Lawrence Wright who takes time off work to set up and DJ for us – all free of charge to the PTA. Lawrence is an active member of the PTA committee and is currently working on a proposal for the new PA equipment for the school hall.
 
Although this was the last school disco as we know it for this academic year, we are planning an outdoor disco with DJ Lawrence alongside the Summer BBQ so don’t forget to put the date in your diary now.  

PTA volunteers: Why, How, What, Where and When


WHY get involved in the PTA?  Here are some of the top reasons:
  • make new friends or get to know the parents of their child’s friends
  • make contacts at school may be good for their business or career options
  • use, expand or grow new skills whilst volunteering
  • be a good role model – It feels good to make a difference
  • have fun, share ideas and try something new
  • find out more about what goes on at their child’s school & get more involved
 
HOW can I get involved?
We always need PTA volunteers for to help run events such as school discos, coffee mornings for new parents, the Summer Fair, cake sales etc but we also have opportunities for parents and staff to join the PTA Committee either with a specific role or as a general member. And, for the Summer Fair PTA members can be co-opted in to join a sub-committee for just that one event.
 
WHAT am I getting in to?
This is one of the fears many people have when asked to volunteer and particularly when the word ‘committee’ comes up. Some people believe they’ll be asked for more time than they can give, others may wonder whether they have the right skills or what they’ll be asked to do. All of these are valid concerns and that’s why we try and make it as easy as possible to understand what’s involved. This includes details of what each volunteer task entails and how long volunteers are asked to help for during each event. Many people worry that by volunteering to help once then they are committing to volunteering for every event – this isn’t the case - you decide if, when and how often to volunteer.  Potential PTA committee members are invited to come along to a meeting or two before committing to stand for election at the AGM.  
 
Where do I find out more?
We advertise our events through regular e-newsletters, Facebook and our PTA website. However, the easiest way to find out more information is via PTAsocial. (It’s not another social networking site – despite the name) We list all our events along with details of the activities and tasks to prepare and run the event. Whenever possible we keep volunteer tasks to an hour or less so that volunteers get to enjoy time with their kids too. Once you’ve decided to volunteer for a task just click on the ‘I can help’ button - it’s really that simple!
 
When can I help?
You can get involved at any time – there’s always something in the pipeline. Events are put up on PTAsocial well in advance so you can plan ahead. We appreciate some of you may not know until much nearer the time if you can help and if that’s the case, please still get in touch even the day before an event.
 
PTA Committee Roles:
Our current Treasurer will be stepping down at the end of this academic year and we are looking for a replacement to start the necessary training and handover as soon as possible. This role doesn't require an accountant but it does need someone who is trustworthy, organised, has a good head for figures and can use Microsoft Excel.
 
We are also looking for members interested in taking on any of the other main roles such as Chairman and Vice-chairman.
 
For all roles, any necessary training will be given and a comprehensive handover will take place.
 
Existing PTA committee members as well as normal PTA members are welcome to apply. (PTA members are defined as teaching staff or parents/carers with a child at St John’s School) If you are interested and want to know more, please see below for details on how to contact us.
