2016 Annual School Supply Drive Results
A nother hugely successful "Fill the Canoe" school supply drive sponsored by Red Canoe Credit Union. We had over 28 participating organizations, businesses, and individuals this year. Without their involvement we would not have near as many supplies donated. After Saturday's giant volunteer sort and distribution we have received the final count...

The final poundage for the 2016 Fill the Canoe School Supply Drive is 2,957 pounds!!!! Over $33,000 worth of supplies totaling 20,657 school supplies donated by the community. To put that number into perspective, that is:
-6,474 individual #2 pencils
-2,654 spiral notebooks
-2,042 folders

While our annual school supply drive has ended, the need for these supplies never ends. We are always collecting all year-round. At the beginning of the school year we try to distribute to the students in the most need, but there are still many we are unaware of until further into the year. As the school year moves on many supplies get used up, lost, or become unusable, therefore, needing to be replenished. If you want to donate or are not sure what to donate, do not hesitate to contact us.Sometimes the only barrier to helping a child succeed in school is a single pencil.

Meet Our New Staff
Marcus Micheles
AmeriCorps, Site Coordinator Support
Colleen Davis
Operations Administrator
We are so happy to announce our new AmeriCorps, Marcus. He will be assisting our Site Coordinator at Sunrise and Firgrove elementary schools with exciting programs to engage students before, during, and after school. He recently graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor's degree in communication studies and is pursuing a graduate degree in school counseling. He is known around the office as Big Tall Strong Guy and never afraid to lend a helping hand.
We also want to welcome Colleen to the team. She is the new Operations Administrator assisting the Executive Director with all operational aspects from grant writing to social media. Before Communities In Schools of Puyallup, Colleen was and Executive Team Leader for Target and graduated from University of Washington in Tacoma with a bachelor's degree in arts, media, and culture. Colleen has a love for animals and is hoping to adopt a mini pig named Pickles next summer.
Community Spotlight
Meet Little Miss Sutton!

She is a 2 year old with a heart of gold. Her parents are instilling in her early the importance of generosity and serving her community. For her second birthday, instead of asking for gifts, her parents held a school supply drive on her behalf. It is parents like little Miss Sutton's that create such amazing communities. Thank you for the selfless gift of these supplies so that children in need can have the tools to succeed in their education and a belated Happy Birthday to Little Miss Sutton.
Summer Highlights
  • March Gladness Students were busy volunteering this summer. They picked tomatoes, weeded a bed of squash, and packed up a truck full of food for a local food bank. Then in August they went to World Vision Warehouse to bundle markers for local teachers that access the warehouse for classroom supplies.
  • We cannot express our gratitude enough for Mr. Chuck Tiernan, Development Director, for Communities In Schools of Washington. Over the years Chuck has selflessly devoted his time to help grow affiliates across the state expanding the number of students we serve collectively. We will miss all you have done and the legacy you have left will be cherished. Thank you for your service and enjoy retirement, you deserve it!
