Cleaning up the Park in memory of Bryan and Pete

Tragically, we lost two very dear Friends - Bryan Maher and Peter Surey - who were both in Killarney for our annual Spring Clean-up Weekend on May 7 and 8. They were involved in a fatal single car crash on Highway 637 just outside of the village of Killarney on the Friday evening. We were all in a state of shock and disbelief as we tried to process this tragic news but Bryan's father Skip who was also in Killarney for the weekend asked that we continue with the clean-up and we did exceedingly well under the circumstances, albeit with very heavy hearts.

In Bryan and Pete's honour, 65 volunteers helped to clean and rehabilitate all the campsites on George Lake, build a boardwalk on the Cranberry Bog Trail, tune up the bikes for our Bike Share program, clean 10 interior campsites, rehabilitate eight George Lake campsites, and construct a new shed. As difficult as it was, the fact we were together to share the sorrow and celebrate their lives through our work helped immensely.

A sunny Winter Weekend in Killarney

Beautiful weather brought out close to 100 people for our 12th annual Winter Weekend on February 18 and 19. On Saturday, participants were treated to a clear night sky for stargazing from the Park's observatory. On Sunday, after a delicious BBQ lunch, participants joined guided snowshoe hikes to discover the Park's winter beautyLater, at the Killarney Bay Inn, it was a full house for a presentation by professional explorer and adventurer Adam Shoalts who shared stories of his trail-blazing journeys to the far corners of the earth and his plan to cross the Arctic in 2017 to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. After the presentation, we shared a special dinner with Friends.

Thanks to everyone who attended and to our volunteers who helped make the weekend a huge success!
