Dear Friends,

We're grateful to each and every donor who has already had their gift matched by the Chris Wilson Foundation today. I hope you’ll join them to help us reach our goal of 200 new donations this Giving Tuesday.

Your support allows us to produce deeply reported investigations that uncover important truths about criminal justice and shine a light on abuse. Our reporting grabs the attention of people who can take action — and they often do. Here are some examples of how our journalism has made an impact:

  • Following our reporting on the Acadiana Center for Youth in St. Martinville, LA, where kids were held in around-the-clock solitary confinement, the state passed a new law limiting, for the first time, the use of solitary confinement on children in Louisiana.
  • Our story on violence and deaths at the newest federal prison, in Thomson, IL, led to an investigation by the Justice Department into claims that staff purposefully housed prisoners with people they knew would be violent.
  • After we found that some foster children were not receiving the federal benefits they were entitled to, several states passed legislation to prevent agencies from taking Social Security checks meant for children.

Independent journalism has tremendous power to drive change. But that’s not possible without financial support from readers like you. Your donation, no matter the amount, has a direct impact on how much we’re able to accomplish.

I hope we can count on your support today. This is a great time to become a member of The Marshall Project because all new donations are currently being matched by the Chris Wilson Foundation, up to $70,000. We’ll also send you one of our ever-so-stylish, members-only tote bags.

With thanks,

Carroll
