It is always a treat to volunteer at the local Community Aid when they need help during their “Family Days Sale”. While helping in the clothing isles Friday I talked with several Shining Stars families who take advantage of this special sale.
It was great to meet up with Kelly, a precious lady that I have not seen in 2 years. Her daughter rode with us for many years but as she got older, she developed allergies. Unfortunately, horses were a part of the allergy problem so she had to stop receiving equine therapy.
Kelly quickly caught me up on their lives. I was excited to hear how things were going for them but one thing stood out to me as she spoke. Life with a special needs child has it’s challenges-a LOT of challenges, but Kelly knew how to be thankful for each day, and each little success. She lives and enjoys a life of gratitude for the Creator who made her daughter the beautiful girl she is.
I want to learn from Kelly and be the kind of person that doesn’t allow circumstances to drag me into despair even if life is unfair. I can choose to fill my mind, my will, and my emotions with praise for every blessing I have. Especially the things most of us take for granted. A warm home, food in the cupboards, clothing, and the love of a Savior.
“Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God”

By Karen Bowling, SSTM Newsletter Editor
This year's Adams County Community Foundation's Giving Spree was filled with an extra level of excitement for SSTM and for our decorated gold coin piggy bank--we won a blue ribbon for “Showmanship!” (For overall display/presentation) A ton of donors & friendly folks were in attendance. Thanks to the generous giving of so many community donors, the total given to the 75-plus organizations was $635,000!!! Thank you ACCF for sponsoring and organizing this amazing yearly event. We'll let you know how SSTM made out when we get the word!
HVAC Upgrade for the Arena
Our Thanks to the Robert C. Hoffman Charitable Endowment Trust for a Grant Award of $4000.00! When our observation room, office, and bathrooms were built we did not have the money to put in the heating/cooling system. A used system was graciously donated but has now worn out. This grant from The Robert C.Hoffman Trust gets us well on our way to the purchase of a new HVAC system. We are grateful for their generosity once again.
THANK YOU to A.B.A.T.E. of PA

The season of Giving Thanks isn't limited to a single month at SS. Each night as volunteers and families pour into the arena I'm reminded of the awesome work God is doing here. How thankful I am to be a part of it all!
2019 Capital Campaign
Shining Stars Therapeutic Riding Program (SSTR) is a 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to provide a means of therapy using horses to help people with disabilities.
SSTR recently celebrated its 14th year in equine therapy. We currently have over 200 participants, 207 volunteers and 16 horses.
Our programs include:
• Therapeutic Riding
• Cart driving for students and seniors unable to get on the back of a horse
• Summer Horse Camps for foster kids and single parent families
• Saturday Night Respite (care givers get a 2 hour break while we enjoy the kids)
• Stars & Stripes veterans’ program……and more.
OUR FUTURE GOAL
Many people are familiar with the indoor Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) located on York Rd in Gettysburg, but are not aware that the horses cannot be housed there because of zoning regulations. Our horses live on a farm 6 miles from the TLC and are hauled to classes each day. The farm has a 13 stall barn, 4 separate fields, a run-in shed, an outdoor arena, and a house for the stable manager/director to live in plus rooms for offices. This is where we hold Summer Horse Camps, training, cart lessons, and Equine Biology classes.
The current owners are planning to retire soon and must sell the farm, giving SSTR first option to buy. The purchase of this farm will give us a permanent home for our horses and the ability to continue the additional programs mentioned for generations to come.
THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
In order to acquire such a purchase SSTR is looking for “Legacy Givers”. Individuals willing to sow into our special needs community to assure these therapies will be available to them in the future.
Each Legacy Giver would donate $1200.00 and will have a plaque placed in the TLC to commemorate their part in making this mission possible and to keep their legacy alive!
