During the colder “off season” months, I am privileged to work with a class from Gettysburg High School. The Equine Science class visits SS in order to get some experiential learning opportunities.
This week I received cards from the students along with a sweet donation to help with our horses. All the cards were incredibly kind, but one really touched my heart. I want to share that letter with you………
“Dear Mrs Crago,
I am writing you this letter of appreciation for the opportunity to learn at Shining Stars.
When you and my peers and teacher said that horses were therapeutic- I thought that they were no different than any other animal (no offence). But I soon saw that horses are indeed very therapeutic and very loving. I fell in love with the horse that was 37 years old. He just had those eyes that looked into you-and when he looked at me I felt a calm. When I saw those horses at your facility, I wanted to cry tears of joy at seeing such beautiful animals. Words alone cannot thank you so much for the opportunity you gave us. I hope this letter reaches you in the warmest regards.
I love how God touches hearts through his beautiful creation- the horse.
"For the Lord God is brighter than the brilliance of a sunrise!
Wrapping himself around me like a shield,
he is so generous with his gifts of grace and glory…."
Psalm 84:11 (TPT)
Shining Stars All Around
Congratulations to the Adams County Special Olympians!!
CONGRATULATIONS to all these fine equestrians! Special Olympics Adams County is celebrating their fifth year of partnering with Shining Stars Therapeutic riding and the athletes had a very successful year. Without wonderful dedicated volunteers from both organizations, this program would not exist. THANK YOU!
2019 EQUESTRIAN Athlete of the Sport
The athlete of the sport for this year is someone that we have watched grow and have an amazing spring session. The gains and progress we saw in this student were astounding. We saw her sharpen her focus, pay attention to instructions and follow through with commands which was really hard for her...but she continued to work on and improve each week. Her physical strength improved through the session as well. We saw her sitting better, improving her posture, holding the reins, and doing more and more of the work herself. And for the first time ever, Julianna was able to mount her self on her horse.
We were all impressed with her courage to work through some difficult situations and continue her lesson as if nothing had ever bothered her. She remained very positive every time she was in the arena. Her smile lights up the whole place both before, during and after lessons. Her interactions with athletes, volunteers, families and the horses was very joyful and inspirational. She especially loves her horse. So on behalf of all of the instructors, we are so very proud to announce that the athlete of the sport is Juliana Rebhan!
It was a beautiful day for the Spring Bazaar.
We had a nice turn out, with lots of new faces.
The food was great!
Check out these awesome cards! Only $10 and you get all these great discounts.
You can pick them up at the arena during class.
Cards will also be available at the Spring Bazaar on May 18th!
Then again when Summer Sessions begin on June 10th,

2019 Capital Campaign
Shining Stars Therapeutic Riding Program (SSTR) is a 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to provide a means of therapy using horses to help people with disabilities.
SSTR is celebrating its 15th year in equine therapy. We currently have over 200 participants, 207 volunteers and 16 horses.
Our programs include:
Cart driving for students and seniors unable to get on the back of a horse
Summer Horse Camps for foster kids and single parent families
Saturday Night Respite (care givers get a 2 hour break while we enjoy the kids)
Stars & Stripes veterans’ program……and more.
OUR FUTURE GOAL
Many people are familiar with the indoor Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) located on York Rd in Gettysburg, but are not aware that the horses cannot be housed there because of zoning regulations. Our horses live on a farm 6 miles from the TLC and are hauled to classes each day. The farm has a 13 stall barn, 4 separate fields, a run-in shed, an outdoor arena, and a house for the stable manager/director to live in plus rooms for offices. This is where we hold Summer Horse Camps, training, cart lessons, and Equine Biology classes.
The current owners are planning to retire soon and must sell the farm, giving SSTR first option to buy. The purchase of this farm will give us a permanent home for our horses and the ability to continue the additional programs mentioned for generations to come.
THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
In order to acquire such a purchase SSTR is looking for “Legacy Givers”. Individuals willing to sow into our special needs community to assure these therapies will be available to them in the future.
Each Legacy Giver would donate $1200.00 and will have a plaque placed in the TLC to commemorate their part in making this mission possible and to keep their legacy alive!

Each November SSTM is privileged to be accepted as a participant in the Adams County Community Foundation's "Giving Spree" event held at the Gettysburg Middle School. Every year donations from this exhibition continue to increase and local non-profits are blessed. ACCF goals for 2019 Giving Spree total donations are to reach a million dollars! Eighty local organizations are expected to participate. Last year the top organization reached $63,000 in donations in just the 3 hours of the event!! SSTM was blessed with $6,000. WE WANT TO DOUBLE THAT IN 2019!!! In order to do that I need a few helpers...CAN YOU STEP UP????
