From The Director's Saddle

By Brandy Crago, SSTM Executive Director
At our recent Silent Auction event we heard the story of a couple whose young daughter was haunted by fear. Fear of heights to be specific. They expressed their heartache as they watched this fear grow. Even walking up two steps would cause their little girl trauma and make her shiver with anxiety. They shared how God had brought them to Shining Stars and how their daughter was able to overcome her fear with the help of a group of people who care deeply, and a horse named Red.

We are blessed to have a wonderful team of volunteers and we are honored by the parents who are willing to share their stories. God is so good to us!
Matt. 20:28
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Shining Stars All Around

By Brandy Crago, SSTM Executive DFirector
Shining Stars Therapeutic Riding Program (SSTR) is a 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to provide a means of therapy using horses to help people with disabilities.

SSTR recently celebrated its 14th year in equine therapy. We currently have over 200 participants, 207 volunteers and 16 horses.

Our programs include:
•  Therapeutic Riding
•   Cart driving for students and seniors unable to get on the back of a horse
•   Summer Horse Camps for foster kids and single parent families
•  Saturday Night Respite (care givers get a 2 hour break while we enjoy the kids)
•   Stars & Stripes veterans’ program……and more.
Many people are familiar with the indoor Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) located on York Rd in Gettysburg, but are not aware that the horses cannot be housed there because of zoning regulations. Our horses live on a farm 6 miles from the TLC and are hauled to classes each day. The farm has a 13 stall barn, 4 separate fields, a run-in shed, an outdoor arena, and a house for the stable manager/director to live in plus rooms for offices. This is where we hold Summer Horse Camps, training, cart lessons, and Equine Biology classes.

The current owners are planning to retire soon and must sell the farm, giving SSTR first option to buy. The purchase of this farm will give us a permanent home for our horses and the ability to continue the additional programs mentioned for generations to come.
In order to acquire such a purchase SSTR is looking for “Legacy Givers”. Individuals willing to sow into our special needs community to assure these therapies will be available to them in the future.

Each Legacy Giver would donate $1200.00 and will have a plaque placed in the TLC to commemorate their part in making this mission possible and to keep their legacy alive!

Please consider the importance of becoming a "Legacy Giver" to bless others!

Recently, Shining Stars was pleased to host a 2-day training clinic with Director Ric Sutton from East Coast Mounted Patrol Association.

A huge thank you to Angela & Allen Hartzell from Lehman's Home & Feed Center for coordinating the 5-K race held in York Springs during it's 150th  Anniversary. The Hartzells presented SS with a check from the proceeds in the amount of $1530.00!
Your generous yearly contributions to so many local community organizations with a focus on helping children is commendable! SSTM is honored & grateful to be a recipient of your financial support and your caring members. THANK YOU!! You can help the Kiwanis this season by purchasing the great PECANS they will be selling for the holidays!!

Volunteers Are Special

The Heart & Hands of Our Programs

The Stars & Stripes equine therapy program for Veterans recently finished up the 2018 schedule with our family picnic. A wonderful time was had by all who attended, especially the children and young people. I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to all the volunteers whose efforts made our day a great success ! We would like to thank our Lord God for the beautiful weather, and for all the folks who make our mission a success, through your prayers, support, and donations.
Stars & Stripes Director, Vincent Umstot
