David, Maria, and Nevaeh: One Family's Story

When Maria Fernanda Filizola met her future husband, David, she learned that he had suffered from kidney disease as a young man. However, she did not understand how difficult kidney disease could become because at the time he was so healthy after having received a successful kidney transplant.

Two years after their daughter, Nevaeh, was born, David became sick again.

The Wait for Erase the Wait is Over!

On the first Sunday of December, a group of waitlisted kidney patients and their friends and family gathered at our Portland office to begin the Living Kidney Donation Mentorship Program. Two years ago we began this program as a pilot in which living kidney recipients and donors trained to become mentors for waitlisted patients. Now we are training a new group of patients and their support people to be paired with previously trained mentors.

Our first gathering was very promising – twelve people attended, eager to learn more about living kidney donation as an option. The series of three trainings include detailed information about the process of living kidney donation, exercises in crafting and sharing the patient’s story, and ideas for how to spread awareness of need.  Thanks to our dedicated volunteer mentors we are able to fill the trainings with wisdom from personal experience. By the end of this month 6-8 waitlisted patients will be paired with a mentor.

If you or someone you know is waitlisted for a kidney transplant and would like more support in searching for a living donor please let us know for consideration in our next training. You can email Arcadia Trueheart at truehear@ohsu.edu!

Thank You Lifesavers!
At the November 16th gathering, MC Sally Showman premiered her KOIN6 interview with Tom and Susan Dieter-Robinson, who shared inspiring updates on the continuing legacies of their daughters, Anna and Abby. Stephanie Holladay and Justice Williams got the crowd on their feet for a rousing Zumba dance, then shared their amazing donation and transplant journeys.

Justice read the names of friends who didn't receive transplants in time, and asked some 500 guests to do their part to bring hope to those who wait. Together with sponsors and an anonymous matching challenge, generous contributors provided more than $145,000 in support for lifesaving programs.
