New Life for Laurie
April 13, 2015 was the beginning of a new chapter of life for Laurie Scheer; it was the day that she received a kidney from her brother, Jeff. It was not the first time she has been in this position.

Laurie experienced her first kidney failure when she was 20, after a bout of strep throat. It was unexpected by the doctors and even more so by Laurie and her family.

No longer able to go to school or live on her own, Laurie moved home. But in 1997, Laurie got a new lease on life in the form of a kidney from her dad, Dan. Dan’s kidney gave Laurie 16 more years of good health and activity. She participated in the Transplant Games of America, where she met her now-fiancé (and Donate Life Northwest volunteer) Lee Golden, Jr. Later, she moved to Vancouver, Washington – working for Southwest Airlines, promoting organ donation, and living an active lifestyle in her spare time. But then, as transplanted kidneys sometimes do, her kidney function began to decline, and in early 2014, Laurie began peritoneal dialysis.

It was a long road to her second transplant, and there were times that Laurie wasn’t sure it was going to happen. But on April 13, it happened. And today, Laurie and her second donated kidney, which has been named “Skywalker,” are facing a bright future.
Your Inspiration x 2!
Threads of Life
What inspires you to do your part with the Donate Life Northwest community?

For volunteer board member, Karen Goulding, it is the legacy of her daughter Alexi. She gave joy to all who knew her and, when she passed away at just 22 months old, Alexi gave the gifts of life, sight and health to other children.

Karen and other volunteers want all grieving families to have the comfort Karen found through Alexi’s organ, eye and tissue donations. That’s why they have joined together to offer a Spring Match Campaign challenge: share a few words about your own inspiration, and they will match your contribution, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000!

Connie’s husband Tom passed away waiting for a lung transplant. Though it is too late for Tom, Connie made her spring gift in Tom’s memory, to bring hope to others who wait.

Gina is a young woman who embodies the joy of giving. A radio show first sparked her inspiration to give a kidney to a stranger; she gives her time and energy as volunteer; and she budgeted carefully to give her spring contribution.

Karen and our spring matchers are proud to double Connie’s and Gina’s gifts, and they want to match your contribution.
