The Donate Lifeline (December Edition)

Giving Love & Giving Life!

 and southwest
As one family mourned the death of their young son, another celebrated the survival of their father.

Every day across the United States and here in Oregon and Southwest Washington, someone needs a heart transplant. The process can be complicated, but at least half of those offered a new heart manage to survive an extra 10 years. The lifesaving medical procedure has improved vastly in the past 30 years, but here in Oregon all of that is due in some part to the donation of one young black man’s heart back in 1985.

Bobby Olive’s heart brought more than just new life to its recipient. His heart went to Wesley D. Merrill, a 44-year-old white man from Battle Ground, Washington. From then on, two families were suddenly united in a lifelong bond that bridged racial differences….

Charitable Gift Annuity

As a registered organ, eye and tissue donor, you already have an important plan to leave a legacy, and estate planning is another way to help build a future without waitlists. To join the Gift of Life Society, simply name “Donate Life Northwest, IRS ID 93-0867552,” as a beneficiary in your will, trust, insurance, retirement plan, or other estate documents.

If you are retired and disappointed with CD rates, stock market volatility, or daunting capital gains tax as you look to increase cash flow, you might also consider a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) – the gift that really gives back.

With a CGA, you can:
  • provide yourself with steady cash flow for life,
  • realize significant tax advantages,
  • and establish your Gift of Life legacy.

Backed by the Oregon Community Foundation, Donate Life Northwest CGAs offer fixed payments at great rates. Rates available now range from 4.4% for a 60-year-old to 9.0% for ages 90 and up.

For example, a 75-year-old can lock in a rate of 5.8% for life, and tax advantages might make that equivalent to 8%, or more. For a personal illustration of exactly how a CGA can work for you and your legacy, contact Alexis Anderson at 503.494.2289, andealex@ohsu.edu

Show Us YOUR Finger This February!

We’re halfway through #FingerFebruary! Have you sent us your foam finger photo yet? If not, there’s still time to get out your foam fingers and show the world that you support organ, eye, and tissue donation! If you don’t have a foam finger, just email Matt at webbema@ohsu.edu. As you can see from some of the photos above, our wonderful volunteers are having some fun snapping some rather creative photos while out and about.
