Streetscape Timing Update
Dear BIA members,
We wish to thank everyone who completed the survey about streetscape construction start date. 51% indicated a preference for 2019 start date (25% indicated 2017 start, roadbed only, and 24% indicated 2017 start, full streetscape). We delegated to Town Council at the November 2nd Planning and Development meeting indicating the preference for a 2019 start date.
At the November 2nd Planning and Development Committee meeting, Town Council approved the Town Staff report that recommends a 2019 construction start date. However, before this date is finalised it must be approved as part of the 2016-2026 Capital Budget that will go to council later this month. When we do get final confirmation we will let you know.
The Lakeshore Rd bridge at 16 Mile Creek also needs to be repaired. Town Staff had indicated a preference to do this at the same time as the streetscape construction. However, at the above mentioned Planning and Development meeting Town Staff advised that they’ve recently learned the bridge cannot wait that long. Construction on the Lakeshore Rd bridge will likely begin in 2017. No phasing plans have been discussed yet (i.e. whether it will affect only pedestrian access, or pedestrian and vehicular access, and how long it will take).
As of now there is no movement on a parking garage in the immediate future. The town is reviewing two options but still needs to figure out financing of either option. In the meantime the town is trying to create 150 additional spaces for parking on alternate town land (currently looking to either the Post Office or Fire Hall site (once that building can be removed)). These will likely be best suited to permit parking given their distance from businesses, but that will hopefully help reduce the permit waiting list.
The town also indicated they are looking into ways to improve the parking signage downtown. They also indicated that the ability to pay for parking (and add time to the meter) by cell phone is still coming, with a hope to roll that out mid-way through 2016.
