Coming Together

By Bernard Lebel, President

Bernard LebelGreetings, fellow Falcons! As we are trucking along in these strangest of times, your club has been busy. Not as busy as usual, but still busy. Since all our in-person activities have been cancelled or postponed, we’ve been racking our brains on how to come together and enjoy our passion for home brew.

Our Grand Hydro, Drew Beechum, started the Happy Quarantine Hour. Every Friday at 5pm, we congregate in a Zoom conference room. We talk about what we’re drinking, brewing, and of course, shoot the shit profusely. That was immediately successful! I don’t know about you, but it gives me something to look forward to at the end of the week, and reconnecting with you means a lot to me.

But something was missing. We could no longer all taste the same beer and talk about it, as we’re used to in our monthly club meeting. Well, Kimberly, the wife of our Publicity Director Mike Resar, came up with an idea: how about we buy beer from a specific brewery in advance, and taste it during the Happy Quarantine Hour? Sure enough, that same week, we had a deal with Five Threads and a lot of us got to taste the same beer. Also an immediate success.

Since then, Mike and I have been working with other breweries to come up with a way of doing this. Believe it or not, it’s not simple, all breweries have a different business model. Some work well and need a bit of organization. But so far the response from breweries has been very positive. It’s awesome that we can support our local breweries in these difficult times. It doesn’t amount to much for them, but they will take all the business they can.

So, stay tuned, more to come. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for the Zoom meeting.

In other news, the club is making progress with the Falcons guidelines revamp effort. If you remember, it was announced earlier this year that we would revisit our guidelines and see how much alignment we can get with BJCP guidelines. It’s too soon to say more, but it’s moving along.

Best wishes,
Bernard

The Pale Ale Challenge

By Bernard Lebel

Flight of pale ale beers 5 people in a Zoom meeting

Back in January, my friend Scot Beidelman approached me with this idea: let's enter a pale ale in the Mayfaire competition, and see who wins. Now the important part is about winning. It was not about making your favorite beer, but to make a beer that was so in line with the style guidelines that it would win. I was in. Scot went around and recruited a bunch of brewers to participate.

Now, with Covid-19, Mayfaire got cancelled. So a bunch of us brewed beer, but we had no competition to enter it. But that was not going to stop us. All of us dropped our beer at the shop in Woodland Hills, and then Scot assembled packs of beer that he personally delivered to all of us.
