“Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly... I wanna see you be brave

NEW SPRING CLASSES

New Youth Program Kicks Off Monday

Say what you want to say in our new spring classes, where everyone is free to speak

Dear friend:

Not that many years ago, in 1991, our founder, Mary Pierce Brosmer, was teaching high school students—girls as well as boys—when the president of the local school board decided he should intervene. He didn’t like the books that Mary was using in her classes. He was offended by Natalie Goldberg’s classic, Writing Down The Bones: Freeing the Writer Within. Apparently he did not want those young voices freed, including his daughter’s, who happened to be in Mary’s class.

The powers that be asked Mary to refrain from using these “feminist” books. No thanks, she said. She decided instead to form her own school, where women and girls would be free to say what they wanted to say, to write what they wanted to write, to read what they wanted to read.

Today, here in Florida especially, we find the need for the safe space that we provide to be more important than ever. Which is why we’re offering a new series of free classes called CURRENTS for high school students (young women, trans, and nonbinary) that will allow them to process their feelings about the tide of current events affecting them, including big topics like climate change, the war in the Ukraine, and what to say when they’re told, “Don’t Say Gay.”

The Last Word

“Innocence, your history of silence
Won’t do you any good
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly... I wanna see you be brave.”
–Lyrics to “Brave” by Sara Bareilles
