Tip: Look Around with Awe
 
In continuing the theme of November being National Gratitude Month, I am going to focus all the WisdomWednesday tips this month on different ways to bring gratitude not only into your life, but into your daily practice.

Years ago I was teaching mindfulness at an independent K-8 school, and each week for 4 years, I went into the classrooms to teach different mindful lessons.

One particular day, I was with a group of 5th graders, and I had them step outside their classroom to look around outside and look for something they've never seen before. It's a fun practice in "Mindful Seeing" to look around as if for the first time.

These kids, most of whom had been there since preschool, were very cocky and had the attitude of "I've seen everything! Why should I look again?"

This one girl, looked around and said, "I've never seen the view."

Let me tell you - the setting of this school is beautiful! It sits atop a hill, with the views of surrounding mountains and hills - it's really gorgeous.

My first response was one of silent judgment, in which I thought, "You've been driving up and down this hill for the past 6 years; how have you never seen this view??"

But I didn't say that.

I said, "Now that you've seen it, you'll never not see it again."

That's awareness. That's gratitude. That's awe.

I encourage you to look around as if for the very first time - what do you think you'll notice? And more importantly, how can you harness this awe into all areas of your life?

Be grateful for the ability to see with new, fresh eyes. It just may have the power to change everything.
