Tip: Gratitude Matters
November is National Gratitude Month, which can be an easy thing to focus on during the holiday season.
But what about your gratitude practice the rest of the year? And more importantly, why does gratitude matter??
Gratitude is such a valuable practice and it's simplicity often allows it be overlooked. And, some people might even think it's cheesy to focus on gratitude, or even worse, they think practicing gratitude won't make a difference in their life.
Well, it does.
But I'll be honest with you. Practicing gratitude will not change your challenging situations or make the overwhelming thoughts or emotions go away.
However, gratitude will positively shift your relationship to whatever is arising.
Let me share an example with you from years ago when I was teaching a mindfulness class:
After guiding a gratitude meditation, an older gentleman, probably in his 60's, got very emotional and very vulnerably shared that earlier that morning, he and his wife had gotten into a big argument. He then said, "...but I'm so grateful I have her to argue with."
This was such a beautiful reframe on his anger; he found the gratitude within it.
So, think about it...what can you be grateful for right now?
As a practice, I challenge you to write down 3 things you're grateful for each day. Notice how it makes you feel. Notice where there is ease or resistance in the practice.
Notice how when you focus on the good, the good becomes easier to find.
If you want to practice more, join me this Friday 11/8 at my Gratitude All Year Long workshop from 12:30-1:30 at my office. Register here.
I'm grateful for you!!
