Happy Monday!

Have you ever had the experience where you woke up one day and didn't remember making the conscious choices to get where you are?

Have you ever felt like you've been defining yourself in an old outdated way, or have been holding onto stories that are no longer serving you, but have no idea how to break free from these old patterns?

Yup! Me too! I've been there, and have felt super stuck. Mindfulness and meditation is the way that I got myself out of that spiral of fear, anxiety and dreading the unknown. While it's easier said than done, here are four simple steps to begin you on your path towards greater peace, personal freedom and presence.

1. Slow down - as long as you are letting inertia and momentum drive you, you are no longer present; it can be easy to let distractions take over, not allowing you to sit with what is. You need to be able to slow down and connect with yourself in the present moment.

2. Breathe - this will allow you to calm your brain and calm your body, which will help you be able to respond and not react to whatever is arising in the present moment - thoughts, emotions, fears, anxieties, distractions...

3. Observe - if you can maintain a stance in which you are the observer to what is arising, then you inherently are separating yourself from it, and therefore are more able to see things for what they are. When you are "in it" you can't see the forest for the trees...stepping back to observe will help you to see more clearly and make more conscious choices.

4. Self-compassion - if you stay in a pattern of judgment, it puts you right back into a cycle of reactivity, making it hard to break free from it. Coming into a place of self-compassion will allow you to treat yourself with more kindness and acceptance, making it easier to have a new response pattern.

All this is easier said than done, but it's a start! Until you recognize that your current patterns aren't working for you, you'll stay stuck. But once you have that awareness, you have the ability to step towards change.

Nestled into an expansive property overlooking picturesque cliffs of the Pacific Ocean, against ginormous mountains, Esalen is a little slice […]
