Tip: Take a Minute and Just Breathe

When I used to teach mindfulness in schools, one day I went into every class, Pre-K through 8th grade, and I asked the students: "If you've been breathing from the moment you are born, until the moment you die, why should you practice it?"

One brilliant 3rd grader - she was 9 years old! - said to me, "Well, I imagine we practice our breathing for the same reason we have a fire drill. We have a fire drill so we know what to do in case of an emergency, and I imagine we practice our breathing so we know how to use it when we need it."

She nailed it. I literally was in tears.

We practice our breathing so we know how to use it when we need it.

We don't wait for the emergency to plan for the emergency; we prepare for it.

And yes, our breathing is no different. When we are stressed, anxious, triggered, overwhelmed, angry (any big emotion - you name it!), our emotional brain gets activated, then hijacks our executive functioning, which is the part of our brain where logic, reason, rationality, decision making, and clear thinking reside. When our executive functioning shuts down, it's hard to calm yourself down and say, "Oh right! I am going to be okay...and I'm already getting through this."

So, set aside time for yourself when you can practice breathing, as little as 1-2 minutes, 1-2 times per day. Not only will you feel more present, be able to clear your mind so you're more focused, your brain will also begin to rewire itself towards greater calm, centering and peace, making it easier to access it when you really need it.

So go ahead, Take a Minute and Just Breathe.
