Mind: blown! That’s the reaction that Operations Manager Karl Arvidsen and I experienced after wandering through a maze of over 500 exhibits at LIGHTFAIR® International—the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference—May 5-7 in New York City. Spending a good deal of time in the Hubbell Lighting booth, in particular, confirmed what we already knew: LED technology is not only here to stay, it’s evolving and improving at light speed!

The future is here in the form of LEDs providing more lumens per watt, lamps that change color or dim at the touch of your cell phone, and so much more. We’re still shaking our heads at all that we can now offer customers while also saving energy and cost! Give us a call to chat more about the latest trends in LED technology.

five team members advance to
lighting specialists

Staying “light years ahead of the rest” in terms of expertise and service is our business model. We’re big believers in investing in continuing education…so we’re pleased to announce that five more Thayer team members have completed the Lighting Specialist (LS1) examination and received LS1 Certification from the National Association of Independent Lighting Distributors (NAILD).

Congratulations to Jan Henryson, Angel Abate, Matt Honson, Barb Contarino, and Kathy Carlson. By completing this rigorous training program—including 8 learning modules with quizzes, a qualification to take the final exam module and a two-part final exam—these pros have proven their knowledge of light and lighting fundamentals and enriched their customer service skills to be of even better service to you.

LED lights tell mosquitoes: buzz off!

DEET spray…coils…citronella…and LED lights? According to a new study from USC, UCLA and Philips Research in the Netherlands, LED lighting may be a surprising addition to your summertime comfort checklist.

The study, published recently by The Royal Society and HuffPost, found that mosquitoes were much less attracted to customized LED lighting than light transmitted by fluorescents.

This is exciting news not just for us who enjoy summer activities, but more importantly, to those at risk of malaria. The research may prove that customized LED lighting can be beneficial to both people and the environment.

One more reason to make the switch to LED, both indoors and out!

glowing review

Not only does better outdoor lighting make businesses more welcoming, it enhances customer and staff safety.

The management at Rockford’s North Towne Mall spent years researching a solution for their inefficient, high-maintenance outdoor VHO fluorescents. Thayer was pleased to recommend and install the ideal LED system. “As the lights went up one section at a time…the building suddenly glowed with a bright, uniform light that’s evenly distributed,” said Building Engineer Gustave Lamesch.

So far, North Towne Mall has enjoyed a 56% reduction in energy consumption! See more enlightening results at www.thayerlightinginc.com/projects.

bright lights in our community

The Rockford community means a lot to us—after all, we’ve been here 27 years! So starting with this issue, we’re shining a well-deserved spotlight on a local non-profit that’s making a real difference today and tomorrow.

Since the 1960s, people struggling with homelessness and despair have found hope and help at the Rockford Rescue Mission. But about 150 women and children are turned away each year because the shelter lacks accommodations for them. Now, the mission is in the middle of a capital campaign to raise funds to build Pitney Place—a 25,000 sq. ft. addition that will provide much-needed shelter and life recovery programs for local women and children in need.

The campaign has raised 67% of its $7 million goal. Won’t you help? You can learn more and contribute at Rockford Rescue Mission. Thank you!
