TaizéService
St. John's is hosting a Taizé Prayer Service on Sunday, March 5 at 7:00 pm in the main worship space at Stanley Street.
This service will include singing, scripture reading, prayers and silent meditation. We look forward to seeing you there!
Youth Group
The Peninsula Youth group will meet again this week from 5:00-7:00 pm on Sunday, March 5 - we will be discussing the question "What is the Bible?". All youth grades 7-12 are welcome; dinner is provided. Please let Kathy Cawsey, kcawsey@eastlink.ca, know if you have any dietary needs.
We have enough volunteers to be an 'extra body' - thank you so much! We still need volunteers to provide dinner for approximately 8 people. Talk to Kathy.
The Lord's Prayer
This coming Sunday we are delighted to introduce a new sung version of The Lord’s Prayer, composed by “our own” Nancy Nelson. We look forward to singing this gentle melody to the
prayer that Jesus gave us for a long time to come!
One of the reasons we are switching from the version (Voices United 959) that we’ve been using thus far is that its composer David Haas has been accused of serious sexual misconduct by dozens of women. As a result, numerous denominations, institutions and religious organizations throughout North America have decided it was no longer appropriate to include David Haas’ music in worship.
Knowing this, the spiritual leadership at St. John’s also feel that we can no longer use his music in any of our gatherings. Sexual abuse is a grave matter that can not be tolerated in any way, nor do we wish to include elements in our worship that might trigger traumatic memories among those who have experienced it.
We are therefore very thankful for Nancy’s talents as a composer and for her willingness to write her own version of The Lord’s Prayer that we are free to use. We know you’ll like it and will embrace it.
National Adffirming Pie Day 2023
Join the GSA in celebrating what it means to be affirming: Public, Intentional
and Explicitly welcoming of 2SLGBTQIA+. You can join us as a participant or
you can bake us a pie to show your support - but why not do both?
Schedule:
On Friday, March 10, we're offering lunch and a pronouns workshop to
Highland Park Jr High's GSA students.
On Sunday, March 12, at 10:30 am we're holding a GSA led worship service at
St. John's United Church that will be accessible for all ages!
On Monday, March 13, at 7:00 pm we'll have an in-person workshop at Stanley
Street on using pronouns: how to know what yours are, how to respectfully use
other's pronouns and what do pronouns have to do with theology anyway?
On Tuesday, March 14,1:00 - 5:00 pm (3.1415), we'll PIE the streets! Look for
rainbow pies and pies on the sidewalks and telephone poles leading to St.
John's and come in for a free slice of pie!
If you are interested in baking a pie for any or all of these events or helping out
in another way, please contact the office at 902-423-8498 or office@stjohnsunited.com.
