Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is natural gas that is created by capturing and then converting biogas that is generated by organic matter as it decomposes. RNG can be produced from a variety of waste stream and renewable biomass sources including wastewater treatment plants and landfills. RNG is an ultra-clean fuel and is considered carbon-negative because it converts more greenhouse gases than it emits.

Hawai‘i Gas was the first in the state to capture and process biogas from the City and County of Honolulu’s Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant on O‘ahu and convert it into RNG. This facility produces up to 800,000 therms of energy per year, enough gas for more than 6,000¹ homes. At the same time, this RNG project reduces the need for approximately 15,000 barrels of oil and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by the amount produced by 400 cars annually. Additionally, since the facility went live in 2018, the City and County of Honolulu generated approximately $2.53 million of revenue by selling the biogas to Hawaiʻi Gas.

One of the priorities for the clean energy future of Hawaiʻi Gas is a focus on RNG which already exists in our energy portfolio yet has room for continued growth through exploration and innovation. On Oʻahu, RNG is used primarily through our 1,100 miles of pipeline network that is fed from our production plant in Barber’s Point. Our underground network currently accommodates a mix of synthetic natural gas (SNG), RNG and up to 15% hydrogen.

Hawaiʻi Gas is also evaluating other projects and new technology that could further diversify and decarbonize our fuel mix. As we better understand the capability of delivering a modified mix of fuel to our customers in a seamless way, Hawaiʻi Gas will continue to invest in adapting the existing infrastructure as needed.

Detecting a Leak

If you suspect a gas leak inside your home or business and cannot shut off the gas, immediately evacuate the area and contact 911. Common signs of a gas leak include:

SMELL:

Odor of rotten eggs. Although natural gas does not have a perceptible smell, Hawaii Gas adds an odorant to our product for this very reason: safety and leak detection!

LISTEN FOR:

An unusual hissing or blowing noise from a gas appliance, the ground or exposed gas piping.

LOOK FOR:

Flames near exposed piping or coming from the ground. Appliance flames that are behaving in an unusual way.
Constant and localized blowing of dirt, dust or debris.
Rapid bubbling at the surface of a body of water such as a puddle.
Unusual brown, dying or dead vegetation in otherwise moist areas over or near pipeline areas as well as unusual soil movement.
Damaged connections to gas appliances.

WATCH FOR:

A sudden and unexplained increase in gas consumption on your gas bill.

What To Do And Not Do If You Detect A Gas Leak

Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames.
Turn off machinery and engines and don’t use cell phones or electrical switches.
Turn off the gas at the tank or appliance if it is accessible and safe to do so.
Ventilate the area by opening windows if indoors.
If the leak is outside and underground, do not fill the hole with water.
If there is a gas fire, do not try to extinguish it unless you are able to shut off the source of the gas.
Immediately leave the area and warn others to stay away.
Call the Hawaiʻi Gas office nearest you if there is no immediate danger or call 911.
DO NOT attempt to turn the gas back on by yourself – contact Hawaiʻi Gas to have a trained, qualified energy professional restore your service.
DO NOT rely on your sense of smell alone to detect the presence of natural gas or propane gas.
