Instructional Support and Research Support Monthly Updates

Canvas Training for Faculty

Canvas logo - canvas replacing blackboardAs you know, UTK is transitioning from the Blackboard Learn LMS to Canvas over the next year. Blackboard and Canvas will run in parallel through May 31, 2017, when Blackboard will be retired. Canvas will be available to faculty for the fall 2016 semester. We are working hard to stand up the production environment, plan migration of courses, and complete other tasks.
If you are interested in using Canvas for fall 2016 classes, please complete a HelpDesk Support Ticket as soon as possible. Additionally, you may wish to attend an Introduction to Canvas Workshop or drop in for an open consultation. We are also happy to schedule special group workshops by request. Keep an eye to your email and the Online@UT website for updates and online training opportunities.

Zoom Enhancements

zoom enhancementsZoom has responded to issues raised by our users. Be sure to update your Zoom client to the latest release to take advantage!

Keep those suggestions coming!

Here are the latest features in Zoom:

  • Instructors and Meeting Leaders may now pause and resume a recording.
  • Instructors and Meeting Leaders may now assign participants to Breakout Rooms while the rooms are in progress. This takes care of that one student who attends the session late, after you have already started the Breakout sessions.
    • When a student joins the meeting while the Breakout Rooms are in progress, the student will see a message at the top of the screen stating: “Breakout Rooms are in progress. Please wait to be assigned.”

Getting Started with High Performance Computing

Newton High Performance Computing logoThe OIT Newton High Performance Computing (HPC) Program offers free access to very powerful Linux cluster computers. UT researchers can use these computers to accelerate Linux applications and to access large amounts of storage and RAM. There is, however, potentially a lot to learn before one can get running at full speed. Fortunately, the Newton Program also offers online training materials that are specifically tailored to the topics that new HPC cluster users will need to know. The Linux command-line basics workshop helps users take their first steps in working in a Linux computing environment. The second workshop, Introduction to HPC, will lead the user step-by-step in running parallel applications on the Newton HPC clusters. These workshops and more resources are available on the Newton website.
