'Tis the Season

"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist."
– Oscar Wilde

As we come to the end of the year, we are excited about the road ahead of us. From our first gender diversity symposium to our Pink Elephant in the Room workshop, this year could not have been so wonderful without the many people who collaborated with us and attended our events. We’ve learned about how culture influences the LGBTQ+ experience and had dinner with community members at one of Einstein’s favorite places in Leiden.
Thank you for making this year one to remember!
Here’s to 2018 and all the good that will come your way!

Looking within Ourselves
On November 22, 2017, LU Pride participated in the Leiden University Diversity Symposium on How inclusion makes diversity work. Besides introducing out fellow students to the work we do at our stand, we also held a workshop titled The Pink Elephant in the Room, during which our board members Irma, Araba (Molly), and Tiaan discussed the issue of discrimination within the LGBTQ+ community, namely representation, racism, and fat-shaming.
We are very glad that we were able to provide a platform for meaningful, impactful discussions that left everyone “just a little uncomfortable,” as Molly put it – discomfort, in this case, is a sign of self-awareness and openness to exploring and modifying one’s biases.

LUPride Recs

The section in which our board members share their favorite LGBTQ+ related media.
Eyewitness (2016, U.S. TV show, based on a Norwegian show of the same name). Two teenage boys meet for a romantic moment in an isolated cabin and end up witnessing a triple homicide. The two grapple with the fear of discovery, internalized homophobia, and teenage drama, all the while trying not to be the next victims of the murderer at large. This a pretty dark show, interspersed with moments of naïve teenage happiness that both characters know cannot possibly last.
The Price of Salt (Carol) (1952, Patricia Highsmith novel). The story of Therese Belivet, a stage designer working in a department store, who meets Carol Aird, a suburban housewife going through a divorce. They fall in love and set out across the United States, pursued by a private investigator who eventually blackmails Carol into making a choice between her daughter and her lover. A well-paced, well-written novel for those looking for something beyond the umbrella of "lesbian romance."
