Happy Pride Month!

"We should indeed keep calm in the face of difference,
and live our lives in a state of inclusion and wonder at the diversity of humanity."
--George Takei

Happy Pride Month, beautiful unicorns! It's summertime! Or, well, until the Dutch weather decides otherwise. What better way to spend the beginning of the summer than with your local LGBTQ+ community? We can't think of anything!

Support LU Pride!
Leiden University Pride is a foundation that aims to create a community of LGBTQ+ identifying individuals and allies who are connected to Leiden University.
Although we strive to keep participation in our events free as much as possible, the organization of some of our events does have some costs. Since we are a non-profit organization, we are thus dependent on donations and sponsorships.
If you would like to support our objectives and work, please consider the possibility of making a small donation! You can find more information on how to do it on our Support LUP page.

Closing Fundraising Borrel
(June 21, 21:00, De Roze Beurs)

Come to our Closing Fundraising Borrel to have a drink in very good company! The academic year is getting to its end, and so our events.
But do not be too sad, because LUPride will be back in September, with new ideas and a new mission: YOU! During the summer break, we will work hard to find out how to build up the Network and the Community we always wanted to be for you. If you enjoyed our work during last year and if you are looking forward to seeing us again soon, come to support us. We will appreciate any donation you want to give us. There will be music, drinks, and some snacks :)
LUPride hosted a lecture surrounding the topic of representation and mental health. Thank you to all those who came!

Lecture: Sexual Orientation in International Human Rights Law
(June 1, 18:00-20:00, Spectrumzaal @ Plexus)
Speaker: Kees Waaldijk, LLM Rotterdam, Ph.D. Maastricht
Over the last few decades, sexual orientation has become a prominent but controversial topic in international human rights law. Some issues have been resolved, but many questions are still open. This lecture will focus on the following questions (and thereby give you an overview of the dynamic field of law): How do international human rights bodies define the notion of “sexual orientation”? Since when does international law prohibit the criminalization of homosexual sex? Does international law require the prohibition of sexual orientation discrimination? Should international human rights demand the opening up of marriage to same-sex couples? (Or at least the recognition of foreign same-sex partnerships?) What violations of the human rights of LGBs amount to “persecution”? Are international minimum norms causing the increasing legal recognition of homosexual orientation in countries around the world? (Or are they caused by such recognition at the national level?)
LUP Borrel
