THE MUNGA MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE 2020

by Firoz Limalia

The 1000km Munga mountain bike race starts in Bloemfontein and ends in Wellington and must be completed within 120 hours. In the 2019 edition, I entered in august and rushed through training. It was uncomfortably hot, extremely windy and mentally challenging. Fast forward a year later, at least this time there is no heat wave. About 3 days before the event, we get an email with an updated gpx file. The route is now 40km longer and is now 1121km instead of 2019’s 1076km. The bainskloof climb at the end has been taken out due to roadworks.

I get to the start early, while riding slowly around, Lonnie Tiegs approaches and we talk. He tells me he wears 2 bib shorts. Cuts the inner one like a bikini he says, uses tea tree oil as chamois cream. We learn new things everyday. Whoever solves the sore rear end problem in Munga will be very rich.

Weekend Ride Schedule during the holiday season

Saturday & Sunday rides will continue through December as usual, i.e. meet at Rietvlei 06h15 to leave at 06h30.  Ride captains, route and distance can be discussed and decided upon by all.

Please continue to practice social distancing, i.e. no hugging, do not ride if you have been in contact with anyone who is positive, do not ride if you are not feeling well, have your buff handy.  We all know the rules!

  • We love having 'newbies' joining the Beginners Group, but before you do, you must be able to ride at least 30km and/or ride 2 laps of Rietvlei.
  • For those coming out of hibernation, please check the average speed below and slot into the group relevant to your fitness level.
  • Routes may be changed on the day, subject to numbers and ride captains.
  • Groups will be split if too large.
