Hi <<First Name>>,

HAPPY SPRING DAY!!!   Now lets just hope that Mother Nature gets the memo so it can start warming up.

Go make yourself a cup of coffee, find a quiet corner, and read both Alaric and Mark's write-up on their recent Trans Baviaans Race & Repeat experiences.  Well worth the read.  We have already started gathering names for the 2023 Trans Baviaans so contact Des to have your name added.

The next newsletter will have write-ups on the last Joburg2c and Berg & Bush.

Trans Baviaans:  Race 2022
By Alaric Sauls

So after putting off the Trans Baviaans for close to six years, I finally decided to do it. I decided to do the 2022 edition with Firoz, how about selecting a partner with lots of endurance riding.

We started training and got to know each other’s riding style and capabilities (although the partnership was a bit odd). After several long (more than 100km per ride) and some hard training rides (also over 100km), my confidence level with riding with an endurance athlete (doing in excess of 300km/one day –mini Munga rides to 1300km consecutive days) somehow improved.

Our build-up to the Trans was progressing very well with me trying to learn my nutritional needs for such a long ride.
On Thursday 11 August, we made our way to the Trans Race with a stopover in Graaff-Reinet the Thursday and traveling to Willowmore the Friday morning.

Trans Baviaans:  Repeat 2022
By Capt Grumpy aka Mark Segers

After doing 5 Trans Baviaans (TB), I swore never to do another one, I had received my plaque and my son proudly keeps it in his display cabinet.

In 2014 if my memory serves me well, I received a free entry from a DOC rider that took the easy way out and immigrated to Australia.

So I invited a few of my mates (Wayne Flood, Pumba, Galloping Giraffe and our incredible second who has since left us for Bluer pastures) my Oldman and that was the DOC entry to this brutally tough but magnificent ride.

In 2018 we took 52 DOC riders down to TB and 50 of them finished, lots of war stories but that would take years of writing and I still have too many unconquered dusty tracks to ride.

So a few weeks ago I started doing some TB training rides for those that had entered the 2022 Race & Repeat:  the double Suikerbos which rained out thank goodness as I had not been training much;  then it was the Rietvlei to Vaal and back, which I had no intention of doing the full ride.  This was shared with my LOVE and myself so not too much riding then I get this desperate call after the Vaal ride.

  • We love having 'newbies' joining the Beginners Group, but before you do, you must be able to ride at least 30km and/or ride 2 laps of Rietvlei.
  • Please check the average speed below and slot into the group relevant to your fitness level.
  • Routes may be changed on the day, subject to numbers and ride captains.
Pen-Re weekday rides - Tuesdays & Thursdays (subject to change)
We have a Pen-Re group, initially for Pensioners and Retirees, but you do not have to be either of these to join our rides.  All you need is a free morning with no time constraints and a sense of humour.  Whoever keeps on looking at their watch pays for coffee!  Rides start from Rietvlei and are anything between 40km to 60km at an average speed of 18kph.  Bring $$$ for coffee afterwards.  Rides are however subject to numbers so we do have a separate WhatsApp group to confirm rides.
