North Florida School of Special Education Introduces a New Summer Camp Program

This summer, North Florida School of Special Education will introduce a new summer camp program thanks to the generosity of the HEAL Foundation. Led by longtime NFSSE staff members, Roberta Mahon and Mary Kay Hall, the camp will focus on nature, exercise, art and science. Roberta Mahon is the school’s Garden Resource instructor. Her classes, for students age 6-18, celebrate hands-on learning utilizing the school’s beautiful farm, greenhouse and newly acquired 5 wooded acres situated directly next door to the school. The Garden Resource classes bridge horticultural therapy activities and science.

Learning through sensory based activities broadens our student’s engagement of subjects. The summer camp, Flora, Fauna & Fitness, will provide students on the Autism Spectrum and other intellectual disabilities with a study of native plants, arts and crafts, gardening, insects and small mammals, and an exercise program using the school’s new Par course and hiking trails. The beautiful, shaded property, The Walking Tree Trails, offers an abundance of learning opportunities for students and camp goers.

Mary Kay Hall is the school’s Physical Therapist and has been with NFSSE for 9 years. Together, they plan an exciting and innovative summer camp program designed to engage and entertain through meaningful activities. For more information on attending Flora, Fauna & Fitness, please contact North Florida School of Special Education at 904-724-8323 or Roberta Mahon at rmahon@northfloridaschool.org

The Arc Village Receives National Attention

Rendering of the future Arc Village from The Arc Jacksonville website.

As construction progresses, The Arc Village continues to receive attention nationally indicating just how many share in our excitement! The link below is to an article that appeared as a digital feature on The Atlantic website. The author Amy Lutz focused on the housing crisis facing the autism community, but her story extends to the situation facing persons with all forms of intellectual or developmental disabilities. She noted that the website gets 20 million unique visitors every month and encouraged the sharing of her work.

The Arc Village was mentioned as a promising housing solution that meets the criteria of integration and choice and quoted President/CEO Jim Whittaker in describing the Village as a "welcoming community" for persons with I/DD to come home to after a day of work, education or recreation in the greater Jacksonville area.
