If you can get your hands on some of your old Frostwood photos, we would love to borrow them. Please send them to, or contact, Stephanie Green at  stephanieschulzgreen@gmail.com.

MUSIC NEWS - Dear Frostwood PTA, Thank you for sponsoring me to attend the annual Texas Music Educators Association convention at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio. Every year TMEA hosts the nation’s largest music educators’ convention. The convention draws over 26,000 attendees comprised of music educators and students from elementary through college age. I have been attending this convention since I was in high school and college, and every year that I attend, I learn new things which inspire my teaching and help to keep me current.

The convention draws over 26,000 attendees. Through this annual convention, TMEA offers its members professional growth, inspiration, and motivation to help them deliver the best music education experience possible for the students of Texas.

The annual convention features over 300+ workshops for Band, Orchestra, Vocal, Elementary and College educators with presentations by internationally recognized educators.  In addition, more than 100+ performances (from elementary through college and professional groups), and over 1,100 exhibit booths representing all facets of the music education industry.  The convention culminates on Saturday with the TMEA All-State Concerts sponsored by the Band, Orchestra, and Vocal Divisions.

Performing music at high levels is good for all of our brains, and especially our students’ brains. Each year at the convention they share the average SAT scores of the high school all- state musicians, and this year, I would like to share them with you, and first of all compare them with the general population’s SAT scores.

According to my convention information:
1080-     The 2016 national average SAT score
1020-     The 2016 Texas average score
1273-     Texas All-State Musicians (orchestra, band, and choirs) combined average score

So, parents, please encourage your students to continue their study of music in middle school and high school. It’s good for their brains and rewarding in so many other aspects of their lives as well!

Sincerely,
Julie Sykes, music teacher

GRADE LEVEL NEWS

Kindergarten News:

1st Grade:

2nd Grade:

3rd Grade:

4th Grade:  The fourth graders will be bringing their recorders and books home after music class this week if they did not get them last week. Please read the note attached to the book about on line access to the Be A Recorder Star website. This is a new feature of our system which gives the students access to the full book and the recordings that are available for the book. The online access is good for one full year- through March 2018. I believe that it will be very helpful to the students.

The on line access code is only good for ONE DEVICE. So Parents, please help your child choose carefully which device to use. Students should bring their RECORDER BOOKS and RECORDERS to both the block music class and short music class each week.

If you did not purchase the PTA school supplies for your child, and have not yet paid for your recorder materials, please send $12.85 to me or to the Frostwood treasurer and label the check or envelope as recorder materials.

Regards, Julie Sykes
