NURSE'S NOTE - Attention Parents: As the 2016-2017 school year comes to a close, please remember that your student may have medications or other items in the Health room.  Please make arrangements to pick up all items no later than May 31st, between 7:45 – 3:15.  If your child takes a daily medication that is needed through the final day of classes, you may pick those up by noon on June 1st.   Any medication left in the Health room after that time will be destroyed, per district guidelines. District policy also states that medications must be returned to the parent/guardian and not the student, in elementary school.

Summer vacation is close at hand, and with it the chance for sunburn/dehydration.  Please use sunscreen liberally on your kids, and be sure they are drinking plenty of fluids.

Also, many of your children will be attending summer camp, which always carries the possibility of lice.  If you see your child scratching their head frequently, please check them for lice. There are a variety of treatments available, and rosemary/mint products have proven to be an effective deterrent against lice. A website to look at products on is   The Lice Place, a facility in Katy that treats lice, also has helpful information on their website –

It’s been my pleasure to care for your children this year, and I wish all of you a safe and healthy summer!

MATH OLYMPIAD - Frostwood’s second year competing in Math Olympiads, an international mathematical problem solving competition (see, was a great success!  Both our fourth grade team and our fifth grade team frequently beat the average percent correct for each individual problem.  Our students participated in five contests (held at Frostwood) with five problems each, and were judged versus same grade students from around the world.  Our students were amazing with their creative approaches to problem solving and great attitudes in attacking difficult problems!  Three of our students, 5th graders Chloe Kim and Nathan Seelig and 4th grader Keigo Yoshida, will be awarded silver pins from MOEMS for their excellent performance in scoring in the top 10% of all participants in their grade levels.  MOEMS will also award merit patches for good scores to 5th graders Eirene Cui, Ella Huang, Semyon Nikulin, Cordelia Portales, Sonia Rio, Jack Springer, Lucille Thevoux-Chabuel, and Abigail Zhang.  Fourth graders receiving merit patches include Joshua Cestero, Luca Dorobantu, Alec Feldhaus, Leena Herdocia, Andrew Ji, Matthew Li, Jimmy Marrs, Daniel Patterson, Aidan Xu, Judy Yang, and Peter Yang.  Additionally, Philippine Brossard, Sara Buheis, Jeb Burkhart, Charlotte Chang, Brian Choi, Viet Ha, Jeffrey Liu, Nami Sadr, Tommy Vandor, Anna Wearing, and Andrew Wright were valuable members of our teams and contributed to the “students teaching students” environment that made us successful this year.  A big thank you to Frostwood PTA and the Project Study program that made this worthwhile and fun competition possible!  4TH GRADE RECORDER RECITALSAs you all know, the fourth graders have been working on learning to read music notes and applying this skill as they learn to play the recorder, one of the first woodwind instruments. I expect the fourth graders to bring their recorders and recorder books to school each music day. I also expect them to practice their songs at home for at least 15- 20 minutes each week. I hope that the students have found the website: www. a fun way  to practice their songs using their individually assigned online access codes.

I expect most students to progress to at least star 9 by the middle of May so that they will be able to perform in the music classroom recitals.

Below are the dates for the classroom recorder recitals which parents may attend if they wish. All parents are invited to attend their child’s block music class on that day.  All of the times for the recitals are: 9:35-10:25 except for the Thursday block.

MONDAY BLOCK: aka “The Grammy’s” MAY 22nd

TUESDAY BLOCK: aka “The MP3’s” Tuesday, May 30th

WEDNESDAY BLOCK: aka “Two Rockin’ Beats” Wednesday, May 31st

*THURSDAY BLOCK: aka: “The Electric Beats” Thursday, May 25th at 9:45 -10:35.

*Note that Thursday, May 25th is also field day. If you wish to attend, please plan to enter the school at the front office for the recitals.

FRIDAY BLOCK: aka “The Rockin’ Records” Friday, May 26th

4TH GRADE RECORDER SUMMER PRACTICE - I hope that you have enjoyed learning to play the recorder. Please don’t lose your recorder over the summer. I want you to take care of it, and keep on playing the songs we learned. Challenge yourself to learn some new songs and create some of your own as well. For the first two months of 5th grade we will review what we learned in our 4th grade recorder unit. We will even play at least two songs that we have learned this year for our December Choir Concert: Ode To Joy and Jingle Bells.  Your access code to the website is good through March 2018, so take advantage of it over the summer!  When we return to Frostwood in August, I hope to hear some new songs that you have taught yourself to play on your recorder!
Have a fun summer!

If you have any questions about the recorder program, please feel free to email me!

Julie Sykes, Frostwood Music Teacher

The Chair can also expand the program with different fitness programs. The Chair is invited to participate in DSHAC meetings as well as the local CSHAC. All sub-chairs of Healthy Lifestyles are returning so it is a great team to continue forward!

Positive Works - +Works (“Positive Works”) is a non-profit organization focused on using positive community change to address bullying and other issues facing children and families.  Parents, teachers, and students have come together to lead a +Works movement and build a positive community on Frostwood’s campus.
This chair would communicate and work directly with the +Works organization.
