We've gotten a few calls on this issue. As a friendly reminder: Today, Tuesday, August 14th, is the primary election in Minnesota. Pursuant to state law, employees can take time off work to vote in any regularly scheduled Minnesota election (including primary elections) without a reduction in pay. State law also prohibits employers from requiring employees to take personal leave or vacation time for the time off necessary to vote.
While state law prohibits employers from interfering with an employee’s right to vote, employers can request that employees provide notice of when they will be gone to vote and can request employees coordinate their absences to minimize adverse impacts on the jobs site. Employers and employees can also mutually agree on voting arrangements.
