In Memoriam: Margrit Mondavi
Aug. 2, 1925 - Sept. 2, 2016

On September 2, 2016 the University of California, Davis, community mourned the passing of one of the university’s and region’s most honored and treasured philanthropists, Margrit Biever Mondavi. “She was a true visionary and we feel so fortunate that she shared so much of her time, generosity and spirit with us. She left such a positive lasting impression on UC Davis — one that will be remembered for hundreds of years to come," said UC Davis Interim Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter.

Walt Klenz Lectureship Series: Jean Charles Boisset

Jean Charles Boisset, owner of the Boisset Collection, was the Walt Klenz Lectureship speaker on Tuesday, November 1st, 2016. The Silverado Vineyards Sensory Theater was filled to capacity for an evening of illuminating discussion. The title of Boisset’s talk, "A Franco-American Love Affair," was a reference to his wife Gina Gallo, of E & J Gallo Winery. The marriage between two of the most powerful names in wine was one of the main topics during the evening's presentation. Attendees saw firsthand what Sonoma Magazine said best when they described Boisset as having "true joie de vivre."

TASTE: 2016 Welcomes 400+ to the Good Life Garden
The Institute's annual fundraiser for students in the Departments of Viticulture and Enology (VEN), and Food Science and Technology (FST) was bigger and better than ever. Over 50 wineries, breweries, cideries, meaderies and food vendors gathered on the patio for an afternoon of unlimited sample sips and bites. Ticket sales and silent auction proceeds raised over $15,000, which will be used to support students in VEN and FST in the form of travel grants, research awards, and internship opportunities.
Major Support for the Institute's Centers of Excellence

The reputations and achievements of the Honey and Pollination Center, and the UC Davis Olive Center continue to attract philanthropy from driving forces in their respective industries. The Olive Center has led the way in establishing quality standards for olive oil sold in the United States and abroad. The Honey and Pollination Center has established mead research at UC Davis – the first time the science of mead making has been studied at any university. In August the Olive Center received $100,000 from Firmin Berta ('57) to help fund lab renovations, one year of graduate student support, lab equipment and maintenance of the olive groves. The Honey and Pollination Center received a second year of $50,000 funding from the Springcreek Foundation in support of its many initiatives and programs.
