Greetings YDEKC Members & Friends!
Last week, the national Youth Development community came to Seattle for the annual Ready by 21 National Meeting. With CEO of the Forum for Youth Investment, Karen Pittman (aka the “grandmother of youth development”) sharing how to change the odds for young people, Turnaround for Children sharing the latest on brain science, and highlights from the National Social Emotional and Academic Development consensus report called A Nation at Hope, we walked away inspired, grounded and encouraged that we are moving in the right direction for our young people here at home.
Over the weekend, our legislature wrapped up an historic session that will change the odds for young people in our state. Just a few of the wins for children and youth include eliminating juvenile detention for non-criminal offenses (SB5290), fully funding the state need grant, funding the Expanded Learning Quality Initiative, extending the Social Emotional Learning Committee (SB5082), and passing I-1000 to eliminate the ban on Affirmative Action. Taken together (and with many other important bills passing), the future is looking bright.

Whole Child, Whole Day: We convene and participate in cross-sector collaborations to improve the alignment of efforts supporting children and youth in King County.
YDEKC's Whole Child, Whole Day Mini-Grants: 16 Projects Funded!
YDEKC, with generous support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is excited to provide funding to community-based organizations and schools for projects that support whole child, whole day efforts in 2019. YDEKC was able to award mini-grants to 10 organizations with a total investment of $95,000. Additionally, YDEKC was able to stretch the budget to partially fund 6 more projects that were recommended by the review panel as promising projects. This was an additional investment of $28,000. YDEKC Measurement Toolkit Training: Using School Data for Program Planning and Evaluation

Schools collect a great deal of information on the students they serve. Many schools are willing to share this data with CBO partners provided there are legal safeguards in place. This workshop will help program staff to interpret and use school-generated data for program planning and evaluation. Registration available here.
White Privilege Conference of the Northwest

How will we create inclusive environments for young people if we aren’t aware of the internalized messages, biases, privilege, etc. that we bring into learning spaces? The White Privilege Symposium (WPS) of the Northwest, which includes a K-12 Educator Action & Accountability Session, is designed to examine patterns, cultures, and systems that contribute to identity, power, and privilege. The event is open to everyone and invites diverse perspectives to look at issues of privilege, including race, gender, sexuality, class, disability, and other intersections of identity.
