May 2018 E-Newsletter

It has been another busy month in the Legislature and here in the community and I am pleased to once again provide you with an update of what I've been up to since my last e-newsletter.
Share Food Truck Unveiling

Thanks to the generous donations of numerous organizations and businesses, the SHARE Food Bank was able to purchase a new refrigerated truck.  The SHARE food bank serves hundreds of families every week in the Tri-Cities – 37% are children.  If you wish to support their efforts please visit their website to find out how you can help.
Air Cadet Squadron 808

I was delighted to receive an invitation to speak to the 808 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron where I covered topics such as my role as an MLA, my work as a Minister and the importance of youth in democracy.  After my speech we had a very engaging Q&A session.  It was an enjoyable evening with a dynamic group of young people.
Rotary Club Citizenship Ceremony

The Rotary Club of Coquitlam hosted a Special Citizenship Ceremony at Coquitlam City Hall.  I was pleased to be there to welcome and to celebrate Canada's newest citizens. Congratulations to all thirty-six of my fellow Canadians!

McHappy Day

I spent some time handing out Big Macs and Happy Meals at McDonalds on McHappy Day to help raise funds in support of local children’s charities and the over 20,000 families across Canada who are staying at a Ronald McDonald House. Thank you to Ivan Krcmar for inviting me to participate in this worthy event.
Celebrating Child Care Month

The BC government proclaimed the month of May as Child Care Month. Minister of State for Child Care Katrina Chen is recognizing Child Care Month by visiting child care providers throughout the province. During her visit to a daycare in Coquitlam MLA Rick Glumac and I took the opportunity to join her. Thank you to Bright Beginnings Daycare for hosting us and for sharing with us your thoughts and suggestions.
2018 Walk for Alzheimer's

I was pleased to join with well over 200 people who participated in the 2018 Walk for Alzheimer’s. I am pictured here with Karen Tyrell, Ken Kuhn, Massi Bakhshian, Jeanne Goodrick and Mary Ong - team members from the Tri-Cities Seniors Planning Network.  Thank you to all of the participants who helped the Alzheimer Society achieve their fundraising goal of $25,000!

Launch of the Korean-translated B.C. Seniors Guide

I joined with Health Minister Adrian Dix for the much anticipated release of the Korean-translated BC Seniors Guide. The Seniors Guide is a compilation of information on provincial and federal programs, benefits and services. To date, the guide has been translated into five languages. For more information and to find the guide online please click here.

Cape Horn Elementary School Community Carnival

It was all fun and games at the Cape Horn Community Carnival - bumper balls, laser tag, pony rides, carnival games and a cake walk! Thank you to Selina Prevost (pictured) and all of the PAC volunteers who put on such an amazing community fair.
Family Fun

I spent a lovely afternoon chatting with constituents during Family Fun Day at Place Maillardville.  There were many fabulous community vendors, food trucks, games, music and face painting making it an enjoyable afternoon for the whole family!

Housing and Local Government

Recognizing that local governments are on the front line of the housing crisis I introduced two pieces of legislation to help them protect and encourage the development of affordable rental housing.

Bill 23 and Bill 18 propose changes that will give local governments stronger zoning tools and help ensure they have the data necessary to plan appropriate housing solutions for their communities.
Community Leadership: A Tribute to Les Wingrove

I paid tribute in the Legislature to Coquitlam resident and lacrosse icon Les Wingrove.  Mr. Wingrove was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2003 and was instrumental in the formation of the Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame.  He will be remembered for his lasting contributions to lacrosse and to the community.
Mental Health Week

May 7th to 13th was Mental Health Week and the Canadian Mental Health Association stopped by the Legislature for a celebration.  It wasn't all fun however - we took some time to talk about mental health and how 1 in 5 British Columbians experience mental health or substance use problems. If you can I encourage you to participate in the annual Ride Don't Hide event coming up on June 24th in communities across BC and Canada.
Tackling Homelessness

I was pleased to be at the opening celebration of a 39 unit modular housing project that was built on the site of the former 'Sugar Mountain' tent city in Vancouver.  I was joined by Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction Shane Simpson, Minister of Advanced Education Melanie Mark and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.
Richmond Chamber of Commerce Luncheon

I joined members of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce to talk about our government's housing affordability initiatives and our plans to address the housing challenges.

(Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, Queenie Choo, Councillor Derek Dang)
Lower Mainland Government Association Annual Convention

About one hundred and fifty elected officials and individuals involved in local government gathered for the annual LMLGA Convention.  This was an excellent opportunity for local governments to make connections across the region and talk about important community and regional issues.

New Homes for Women Fleeing Violence

I was proud to stand with Premier John Horgan to announce our government's commitment to build 1,500 new supportive homes throughout the province for women and children fleeing domestic violence. The Women’s Transition Housing Fund program will build and operate transition houses, safe houses, second-stage and long-term housing.  For more information click here.
Public Engagement Opportunities

The provincial government has numerous opportunities for public engagement and consultation. I have provided links to three of these opportunities below: "Rental Housing Review," "Help Change Mental Health & Addiction Services" and the "Small Business Task Force." If you wish to provide input into any of these projects please click on the topic-specific icon below.  If you wish to view all of the open public engagement opportunities across the province click here.
Rental Task Force

You can now share you ideas on how to improve rental housing laws and policies for renters and rental housing providers.

There are several ways you may participate in the public engagement (open until July 6 at 4 pm):

The legislative session has come to an end and we have worked very hard this Spring to deliver on our commitments. While acknowledging we still have much to do, I am very pleased at what we have accomplished thus far.

Until next time,
