How the Wrong Word Could
Damage Your Reputation

Giving Journalism A Bad Name
Last November, Rolling Stone magazine published a disturbing article titled "A Rape on Campus," in which writer Sabrina Rubin Erdely detailed an alleged culture of sexual assault and administrative ambivalence at the University of Virginia. Though the article was widely disputed, the magazine stood behind the story — until now. Rolling Stone officially retracted it following the release of a new report on (of all days) Easter Sunday. The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism declared the piece a "journalistic failure that was avoidable," while The New York Times blames a "lack of skepticism" on the part of the magazine's editors and calls the whole ordeal a prime example of "how not to practice journalism." A sad low point for a once-revered magazine.
