SOLAS update

Paper on SOLAS Science and Society published
The ability to predict and respond to future environmental change relies on a detailed understanding of the physical and biogeochemical interactions and feedbacks between the ocean and atmosphere. SOLAS instigated a collaborative initiative to connect efforts in the natural and social sciences related to these processes, as a contribution to the emerging Future Earth Ocean Knowledge-Action Network (Ocean KAN). Three SOLAS research areas were targeted for a case study to determine a more effective method of interdisciplinary research: valuing carbon and the ocean’s role; air-sea interactions, policy and stewardship; and, air-sea interactions and the shipping industry. The flowchart illustrating the SOLAS Science and Society initiative process is as follows:

Paper from SOLAS endorsed project AMBIEnCE on dynamic structural model of organic aerosols in a costal marine site published
This article describes a new quantitative structural model of inhomogeneous atmospheric aerosol water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) in rapidly changing atmospheric conditions at a costal marine site. We confirmed the presence of three independent classes of compounds that vary both in content and molecular diversity within very short periods of time: heteroatomrich aliphatic (either chain or branched), carbohydrate-like moieties, and highly substituted aromatic units. These findings of AMBIEnCE project are crucial to bridge the gap and resolve the discrepancies between modeled and measured aerosol WSOM, enabling a better representation of organic aerosols in climate studies.

Atmospheric trace metal deposition from natural and anthropogenic sources in western Australia
Studies of the sources and fluxes of atmospheric trace metals in the southwest corner of Australia have been limited, although aerosol trace metal emissions transported off-shore may provide vital micronutrients to the surrounding waters. The atmospheric concentrations and fluxes of total and labile (leachable plus soluble) forms of iron (Fe), vanadium (V), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) were determined, following a multi-step leaching protocol. Their sources were investigated using marker analysis and a Positive Matrix Factorisation method. Aerosols were mostly of natural sources and contained a smaller proportion of labile Fe than aerosols sampled on the eastern coastline of Australia.

Insert chart shows fractional Fe solubility in aerosol samples as mean results for seasonal groups .Grey bars indicate the soluble and white bars the leachable Fe fraction contributing to total Fe, and the black dots show the enrichment factor (EF) for Fe.
Blue Paper on Integrated Ocean Management released
The High Level Panel for Sustainable Ocean Economy recently released a Blue Paper on Integrated Ocean Management. The paper makes the case for integrated ecosystem-based management which combines value creation and the safeguarding of ecosystem health. By learning from previous successes and failures, the paper identifies existing impediments in policy and practice and lays out a set of steps and guiding principles towards successfully integrated ocean management. Finally, it assesses current opportunities to accelerate progress and the impact of these opportunities on jobs and equity.

The paper was launched via a webinar ‘Integrated Ocean Management’. Find the video of the webinar here

SOLAS endorsement of integrated atmosphere-ocean time series stations
SOLAS has launched a formal process to endorse integrated atmosphere-ocean time series stations. If you are a principal investigator of a time series station within SOLAS science, you could ask SOLAS for formal endorsement. SOLAS endorsement will help to communicate research and highlights of your time series station to the wider community and provide links with other international organisations.

Please fill the endorsement form, send it to IPO, and inform your national contact (if there is one) about your application. Find more information on SOLAS endorsement here.
The Fifth Xiamen Symposium on Marine Environmental Sciences (XMAS-V): deadline for session and mini workshop proposals extended
The SOLAS co-sponsored XMAS-V will be held in Xiamen from January 11th to 14th, 2021. XMAS-V will focus on how Multidisciplinary Sciences Can Serve a Sustainable and Healthy Ocean. The symposium will consist of different, interconnected sessions covering physical oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, biological oceanography, and marine ecotoxicology along with workshops for emerging topics in marine environmental sciences such as how to achieve the goals outlined in the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). It will also be one of the important hallmarks of Xiamen University’s centenary celebrations.

XMAS-V is calling for session and mini workshop proposals. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the deadline for proposal submission has been extended to July 31st, 2020. Limited financial support will be available for each session. Please check the details in the SESSION CALL. For questions, please contact the Local Organizing Committee via email.
